We recently had the chance to connect with Maria Whitfield and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Maria, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
Trust beats trends! My clients often sticks with me because i remember every details about their life, my Clients don’t tell their friends “my layers were blended perfectly.” They say, “I love going there — coz she make me feel amazing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Maria Whitfield — proud small business owner and stylist at Beauty by Maria LLC Salon in Colorado Springs.
For me, hair is more than style. It’s confidence. It’s identity. It’s self-care. When my clients sit in my chair, it’s not just about a cut or color — it’s about pressing reset, recharging, and walking out feeling like the best version of themselves.
I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 5 years, starting my journey in Doha, Qatar, as a makeup artist before bringing my passion for beauty back home. Every day, I’m inspired by the trust my clients place in me and the transformations we create together. Whether it’s a bold new look, maintaining your signature style, or that effortless wash-and-go, I believe the right hair can change more than your day — it can change how you see yourself.
At Beauty by Maria LLC Salon, you’ll always find a welcoming space, good vibes, and someone who truly cares about you — not just your hair. My promise is simple: you’ll leave my chair looking fresh and feeling unstoppable.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who inspired me most in my work was my first mentor in the beauty industry. She was the official hair and makeup artist of Miss Universe Philippines — and watching her work taught me that beauty is about so much more than technique.
For me, doing hair and makeup has always been a love language. My mentor showed me that being a stylist isn’t just about the final look — it’s about listening, building trust, and helping people feel truly seen. That lesson stuck with me, and it’s the foundation of how I run my salon today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say something to my younger self, I’d say: trust the journey. Every challenge, every long day, and every risk you take is leading you to the place you’re meant to be. Believe in your passion, work hard, and don’t be afraid to shine.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
“You need expensive products or constant appointments to look good.”
A big industry lie is that beauty has to be high-maintenance. In reality, the best styles are the ones that fit your lifestyle — something you can manage and feel confident with every day, not just when you leave the salon.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was born to help people feel their best. Hairstyling lets me combine art, care, and conversation every day, so I’m doing what I was born to do—not just what I was told. I believe I was born to create, connect, and boost confidence. Hairstyling lets me do that in real time—transforming someone’s look and mood while building trust with each client. I didn’t just fall into it; I trained, practiced, and chose a path where creativity and people skills come together. I stay here because every day I’m growing, learning new techniques, and helping clients feel powerful in their own skin.
