Melissa Parr shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Melissa, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Many people believe that interior designers are too expensive, but I’m here to dispel that misconception. Sheer Interiors offers affordable design services that provide value and timeless style, all for an hourly fee with no minimums, allowing clients to use our services as much or as little as needed at any stage of their project.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Melissa Parr, owner and lead designer of Sheer Interiors, and a proud University of Florida graduate [Go Gators!] with a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Over seven years ago, my husband Ryan received a job offer in Colorado, prompting us to make the move across the country. Following our arrival, I decided to pursue my dream of owning my own design firm, which led to the creation of Sheer Interiors. I initially built the business in the Breckenridge area, working on many beautiful mountain homes, with half of my current client base still in that region. Now based in the Front Range, I’ve expanded into the Denver Metro area. Sheer Interiors specializes in residential design, offering services such as paint selection, new construction and remodel consultation, kitchen and bathroom design, space redesign, material selection, and personal shopping—ranging from single rooms to whole-home projects. We also provide E-Design and travel services for projects outside our local area and collaborate with realtors and sellers on light home staging to ensure properties look their best for showings. The sky is the limit for our potential collaboration.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I worked for two years in commercial design at a furniture dealer before realizing my passion was in residential design working directly with clients in their homes. I soon got in touch with my wonderful mentor, work mom, and friend, Liz Studer with Decorator Girl. Together, we grew the company as well as our brand. She taught me all about design and I brought my technological skills to the team. We made the perfect duo. Our first major project was a remodel of a golf clubhouse turned full service restaurant, Talons. We then went on to participate in two designer dream homes for the Riverside Avondale Preservation Society (RAPP). During my three years at Decorator Girl, we were also recognized as best of Houzz every year, won the Bold City Best interior designer in 2017, gained over 200 news clients, and were featured in the December 2016 issue of Jacksonville Magazine.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Always believe in your dreams and follow your heart and what you are passionate about. It will lead you somewhere truly amazing. I get to live out my dream of owning my own design business because I stayed true to what I love.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I am truly invested in my clients and their projects. I will do anything to ensure they absolutely love the end result of our work together.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Sipping on a Starbucks, strolling through the aisles at HomeGoods while shopping for my clients. That is my happy place at work.
