Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Peg Connery-Boyd of Boulder area

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Peg Connery-Boyd. Check out our conversation below.

Peg, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I’ve grown to find that energy is the key for my life to be filled with health, light and joy. I tap into energy through meditation and spending time in nature, painting, and a little bit of Reiki now and then. My goal is to share energy through my artwork, and in my teaching. It’s exciting to me when people can feel the light coming through my work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been painting in oils for about 25 years. I found art again as part of my healing journey after I had a couple of years of serious illness and am so grateful now that I did.

As a child, I loved to draw and paint, but put it on the back shelf for years while I went to college, then got a practical job as a computer programmer and project manager, and raised a family of three sons with my husband Jim. Eventually, I realized that I was missing a piece of my soul, and started to take my artwork seriously.

I studied oil painting on the Connecticut shoreline on a part time basis for about 10 years, mostly doing realistic painting of figures and lots of portraits, but I always felt called toward landscapes.

We moved west in 2017, first to Arizona and then to Colorado. Since I’ve been surrounded by the vast dramatic beauty of the mountains, I’ve been soaking in nature’s energy, and have been experimenting with larger canvases and looser, more abstract expression.

I’m so grateful for the vibrant art community in the Boulder area and I am enjoying showing and sharing my work, and teaching workshops locally

I’m feeling called to host some type of art retreats in the future, to help to “water some art seed” for others, but not sure how that will evolve yet.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I think I thought that the world was very black and white, right and wrong, and that I would always be “right” and follow a logical, sensible progression living in New England forever.

I think I’ve learned that the world is a lot more complex, that everybody’s faces challenges, and that we never know what is coming around the corner. I would have never guessed that I would be an artist living in Colorado when I was younger.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
My artwork is a gift that came through healing from suffering and illness.

I also discovered meditation which has been life changing for me.

I think sometimes we have to get knocked down in order to learn what is really important and find ourselves.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I think it’s pretty close. Always a bit challenging for me to be out in public and I love when the art can kind of speak for me. I spend a lot of time alone in my studio, so sometimes have trouble finding words. Teaching workshops has kind of helped me to get out there more in public and has been a lot of fun.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I actually had one of those “tap dancing”days today, when I just couldn’t wait to get up to the studio and pick up my brushes. I have about 3-4 pieces that I am working on:!a big mountainscape and a little seascape and some hydrangeas (I could paint them every day). I just had this feeling about how lucky and blessed I am that I get to spend my days this way and my little art business is working!
