Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Randi Van Horn

We recently had the chance to connect with Randi Van Horn and have shared our conversation below.

Randi, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Spending time in the Colorado mountains with my family helps me completely lose track of time in the best way. Whether it’s spontaneous Jeep drives in my Wrangler or slow mornings with my husband and our two-year-old son (with another baby boy due this fall), those moments help me unplug and reset.

And when I really need to reconnect with myself, I head back to my roots—my hometown in Illinois or our family’s cabin. There’s something about going home that reminds me who I am and why I do what I do. It’s the perfect balance of adventure and grounding.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Absolutely! I’m Randi Van Horn, founder of Brand by Ran, a creative studio focused on branding, design, and social media strategy for real estate professionals. For the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Compass agents nationwide—helping them build standout brands and maintain a consistent, elevated presence online.

What sets Brand by Ran apart is the combination of creative strategy and hands-on support. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions—everything I create is tailored to the individual agent and their goals, whether it’s monthly content, custom branding, or done-for-you design.

I’m currently based in the mountains of Colorado with my husband and our two-year-old son, and we’re expecting another little one this fall. It’s a busy season of life, but also an incredibly inspiring one.

Right now, I’m focused on scaling my services and creating more systems and resources that help agents stay consistent, save time, and show up confidently in their marketing.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Growing up, I believed that hard work alone—hours of hustle and physical effort—was the key to success. I was raised with a strong work ethic, and while that foundation has served me well, I’ve since learned that working smarter—not just harder—is what truly creates sustainable success.

In building my business, I’ve come to value strategy, boundaries, and systems just as much as grit. Efficiency, creativity, and thoughtful delegation have helped me grow Brand by Ran far more than sheer effort ever could. It’s been a mindset shift that changed everything.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
When a previous business was unexpectedly shut down by Etsy, it was a tough but pivotal moment. I had poured everything into that single platform—so when it disappeared, so did my revenue stream. That experience taught me the hard way not to put all my eggs in one basket.

Since then, I’ve completely changed how I approach business. I’ve diversified my offerings, expanded across multiple platforms, and prioritized building a brand that can thrive independently—regardless of the algorithm or marketplace. That failure ultimately pushed me to build something smarter, stronger, and more sustainable.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
That life shouldn’t revolve around work—work should revolve around life. In a world that often glorifies the hustle, I genuinely believe in the power of disconnecting and resetting. Prioritizing rest, family, and personal time isn’t a weakness—it’s essential to maintaining creativity, clarity, and long-term success.

Building a business around my life, not the other way around, has helped me stay aligned, avoid burnout, and show up fully for both my clients and my family.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when the work is done and I’m off the grid in the mountains with my boys. Whether we’re camping, hiking, or spending time by the reservoirs, there’s something incredibly calming about being surrounded by nature—with no cell service and no pressure to be “on.”

It’s one of the few times I truly get to slow down, be present, and reconnect—with myself and my family. I get to decide when (or if) I turn the Wi-Fi back on, and that kind of stillness is where I feel most grounded.
