Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Shamon Ingram of Denver

We recently had the chance to connect with Shamon Ingram and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Shamon , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Hello everyone!! First I would like to take the time to thank you for listening to my story. What I think is the biggest misunderstanding of our business is that we are a bunch of untrained people holding a sign. This is not true at all, we are very passionate, trained professionals who have studied many years in the art of sign spinning.

We are at times misunderstood because society does not deem sign spinning as a very lucrative job. Many see sign spinning as a deadend job with no future. Sign spinning starts on the corner but there are many moving parts behind the scenes that make the whole operation look seamless. We have people in our sales and marketing department. We have account managers who work on the financial side of sign spinning. General managers, auditors, and spinstructors who help with the on the ground operations. Like any corporation there are alot of ins and outs that make sign spinning work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shamon Ingram, professional sign spinner and the current General Manger of the AArrow Sign Spinners here in the Mile-High City. I am better know by my stage name Arizona Bamm but have recently changed my name to MilehighBamm to better fit my current situation. Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my grandma. My grandmother Annie Bell Williams was a very strong black woman from Wreston, Louisiana. She grew up working with her siblings on a cotton farm. She told me stories of how hard they had to work in the fields, after slavery of course, and still go to school. She left home when she was 17 and made a living for herself. She worked for the Housing Authority in Flagstaff, Arizona up until the time I was born. Then she was forced to stop working to take care of me and my sister because my mom had a nervous breakdown.

Needless to say my grandmother worked tirelessly taking care of her family. She made sure we knew who God is, made sure we knew right from wrong and instilled values in us that still live on today. I am very grateful for my grandmother

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
YES!!! There have been many of times I have wanted to give up and I truly am a living testament to the “Footprints” posters you may have seen time and time again. You know the one about the Footprints in the sand?

So the story goes a guys meets Jesus at the end of his life and they are looking back at the footprints left by him as he traveled through life. The guy noticed that there are time when he seen two sets of foot prints and time when he only seen one set of foot prints. He turns two Jesus and asks, why there where two sets of footprints. Jesus replied, “Those were the times I walked with you.” Looking confused and upset the man said, “So the one set of footprints are the times when I walked alone?” Jesus turned to him with a smile and said,”No, my child those are the times I carried you!”

I say this all the time, “I would of gave up a long time ago if it was for He who strengthens me!” I truly believe that I would not be where I am today if not for the grace of God! Life has it’s ups and downs but like I always say you can’t enjoy the view from the peaks without first traveling through the valley

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
This is a great question, the public version of me is definitely not the real me. When I am in the public I am preforming my job. My job is to get you to pay attention to me long enough that you see the sign I am holding and hopefully it is a product or service you need or are interested in. I have to smile, wave, be silly, dance and of course sign spinning to get people’s attention. Luckily this come naturally to me because I have always loved interacting with people. The only problem is I also deal with depression and anxiety.

I am a people’s person and have a very attractive personality. People tell me all the time how my smile lights up the room. I love making other people smile, it really fuels my spirit and keeps me going. I created the character Arizona Bamm aka MilehighBamm to disassociate Shamon Ingram the person from Bamm the performer. Shamon is very self conscious, kinda shy, and an introvert. Bamm is my opposite not afraid to take risk, arrogant and rocky and ready to put on a show. Creating an alter-ego has help me let go and true embrace my passions.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I believe if I were to quit sign spinning tomorrow the thing my customers will miss most about me is our connections. Each and every one of my clients know me by name and we have built great relationships throughout the years. I am very happy to call each one of them not only a client but a member of our sign spinning family. I have worked with small businesses and huge corporations but the formula remains the same. We listen to the costumers needs and we do our best to meet them or exceed them.
