Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Sandusky.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a 4x cancer survivor, a graduate from Northwestern University with my degree in Human Development and Psychological Services and a graduate from the University of Colorado with my Masters in Special Education. I am a former Special Education teacher, author of Hope Triumphs ALL, and co-author of Jumpstart Your ____ Vol III, where I contributed a chapter called Jumpstart Your Best Life. I am an independent consultant with a holistic health, skin and beauty company where I get to help people discover the powerful connection between mind, body, skin and soul.
When I went through cancer treatment, I had no idea how much control I actually had over my health. There is so much that I know now that I wish I had known then. I have always had the heart to connect with and help people and make a positive impact in the world… to make people feel special, seen, welcome and heard. My experiences with going through my own health struggles and realizing what it’s like to not feel up to doing much of anything led me to my passion of empowering people to reclaim their health, take control so that they can live their life to the fullest and live a life they love. I live in Colorado with my husband Ryan and identical 5-year-old twins Mason and Gryffin!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha… that’s funny. My life has been filled with obstacles. I wouldn’t call them struggles as they have all been opportunities to grow and learn. Have they been easy, no. Having Leukemia 4x was hard and awful AND something that built so much of the foundation of who I am today. I had to learn to have hope, trust that there was a bigger picture and lessons to be learned. I had to believe in myself and my ability to get through it and lean on the people around me for help and support. There was a lot that I missed out on as a kid and teenager and early twenties, and so much that I realize now was setting me up for my purpose and passion in this life.
As an entrepreneur, I had to learn that rejection is part of the journey. Not everyone will believe in me and what I am up to, but what other people think is not important. My biggest obstacle was me… my fear of rejection and what other people think of me. I was afraid of doing it wrong or looking bad. I had to stop caring about that. What is important is what I believe in. I had to gain confidence to trust myself. I had to learn how to get uncomfortable and grow in order to grow in my business, as a leader and as a human. If I wanted to make a big impact, I had to stop holding myself back and grow. I didn’t make all of my goals at times I set, and I realized that just meant there was more growing to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My passion and what I specialize in is helping empower people with their health and life. I love to support people through learning how to take control of how their body looks and feels. I support people through a 30-day health living and beyond program where I teach them how to support their gut and microbiome, flush out toxins and decrease inflammation in their body. I do this by helping people learn what foods serve their bodies and what foods don’t. Also, learning how to be more in tune with the signals their body is sending them. So many people have a huge disconnect between what they are putting in and on their body and how their body looks and feels. For example, I learned that for me gluten and dairy make me feel bloated, inflamed and cause my sinuses to be stuffy.
I also learned that gut health affects everything… acne, anxiety, stress, sleep, depression, mood, weight, energy and on and on. When we support the health of our gut, we support our whole body. When we feel happier and have more energy, we are more motivated to go after our dreams and passions! We are hungry to live life on a bigger scale! Food either adds to our health or adds to our illness. What sets me apart is that I have been there. I know what it’s like to feel like my body and life was falling apart. I know what it’s like to feel like I will never be able to do what I want because I didn’t feel up to it… I didn’t have the energy or passion. And now I want to share what I have learned with everyone, so they can take that control back of their health and life too. I believe we are all put on this planet to experience all of life and do great things.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The biggest tip I have for networking is being genuinely interested in getting to know others. Be invested in listening and learning about them. When people know that you care and when you get to know what is important to them, amazing connections happen that can lead to so many different possibilities.
