Life & Work with Alex Cummings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cummings.

Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began making macrame in 2019 as a fun hobby, I had just graduated college and suddenly had a lot of time on my hands to fill and needed a craft. I have always been drawn to arts and crafts and also come from a family of small business owners. It felt right to create a small business of my own with my new craft.

I eventually added hand-poured candles into my products. I’ve participated in local Farmer’s markets and taught a few classes on both macrame and candles. Creating art and selling handmade items is truly a dream come true for me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have dealt with a few challenges on the way, Macrame has become a very saturated market as it’s come back into popularity. Staying unique and different is a strong value of mine as I navigate the market with other makers. Most macrame artists do have an amazing and supportive community with each other and I’ve met other talented artists.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
The process of creation is the most important thing to me. The end product is fun and I love sharing my art and creations with others but the meditative process of creation itself is my favorite part.
