Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice VL.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a South African author residing in the USA for the past almost 5 years. I was invited by my publisher to attend a book tour and book signing events in 2018, and realized that my writing career would remain stagnant in South Africa.
An opportunity presented itself to us to remain in the US, and as a result, I’ve enjoyed many opportunities to further my career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. There are so many obstacles to not only keeping writing, but to adjusting to a new country, new habits and cultures, and of course, the communication gap even though we all speak the same language. The differences are in the meaning of words, the different ways in which we refer to certain things, and the slang.
It’s tough to keep it all balanced, and at the same time, attend the events to further market yourself and your work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I just love what I do, so whether it sets me apart from others or not, doesn’t matter to me. I am content with taking my stories, and giving them a life that others can climb into when they need a break from the real world.
I was a finalist in 2018 in The Author Academy Awards and again in 2020 with 3 titles. I am proud of my work, and the dedication, and focus I’ve put into it. My voice may not be loud, but my pen is mighty, and if that’s how I can convey a message, I am happy to do it.
I write mainly fiction novels and some fantasy which includes a series, but I have written and published non-fiction works as well.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Authors are not competing with one another, nor are they fighting for a spot in the market.
It is important to remember that some are struggling, and can feel completely alone. I have learned to help where I can, give advice on what I know, and remind other authors that we are a loving and caring community, not competitors.
