Life & Work with Alycia Price

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alycia Price.

Alycia Price

Hi Alycia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all began with loving art growing up and always needing a creative outlet. Being a teacher and mom at the time, I always craved a way to express my creativity. Immersing myself in nature is very therapeutic for me so jogging with my dogs outside is part of my daily routine.

I was jogging in the fall of October 2022 with my dogs and double stroller surrounded by the fall leaves everywhere. I immediately saw that the leaves resembled feathers like my chickens at home. I thought it would be interesting to create a chicken out of leaves and a couple weeks later with much trial and error, I created my first chicken piece.

It was all a hobby during nap times and bedtimes for my kids but when I started playing with flower petals expanding into exotic birds, I realized that others might enjoy this too. That is when Pure Flora Creations LLC was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had some struggles and a lot of trial and error with working with nature along the way. Timing of the picking of the leaves and flowers is key and with the seasons,I am limited on what I have preserved. Every leaf is different in what it needs to be preserved. Every flower is different in what it needs as well. They are all brittle but some more than others.

Some don’t preserve at all or the way I hope. Glue sometimes messes with the preservation and color. There are possibilities of too much glue, too little glue, what type of glue works best, you name it. With all of these challenges though, it has been so exciting to see what works as I continue to come up with a nice system. All of the challenges with every process have also helped me grow and expand into all animal worlds of variety and realize that the sky is the limit.

Building a business and realizing the tax system still brings some confusion and struggles but I am getting more and more experience under my belt. I am thankful that Colorado has nice resources online for anyone starting a business so I have utilized those.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Using a variety of preserved leaves, grasses, and flowers, I bring animals and creatures to life in original pieces that last a lifetime. I do a lot of commission pieces including dogs, chickens, horses, etc. and it is so exciting to see the client so happy when they receive their piece. All my creations come matted and framed so they are ready for anyone’s wall.

I have seen pictures of foliage turned into art but I haven’t ever seen the actual flowers and leaves turned into preserved complete pieces like I create. I am most proud of coming up with this idea on my own and turning it to fruition with hard work and dedication. It is so exciting to see the personality of these creatures come to life through a picture.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
My family is my driving force and motivation every single day. I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my husband, Brennan, and our children.

My chickens and their “floofiness” are behind the random inspiration and my dogs and kids keep me active and out in nature so I am thankful for all of them and all of our adventures.
