Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Gibson
Hi Angela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was in high school, I worked at Olan Mills Portrait Studios and had always had a passion for photography but life kept getting in the way. There was a time when I was the breadwinner for our family and had to work over 60 hrs a week at a sales job that required lots of driving and hotel stays. I sold food so there were at least some great perks. My husband, Kenn, was Mr. Mom. However, I was always exhausted so photography got put on the back burner for many years. But I was not too exhausted to have the occasional mini photo shoot with my daughter. Some of my first attempts were a little overexposed but I could still see her adorable big brown eyes and expressions and that was golden. Over the years I would still pick up the camera and take photos of nature or vacations. Then it grew into events for my daughter’s tournaments around Colorado and California and being on the photography team at my church in Colorado Springs. When my daughter was getting ready to launch off to college, I was getting that itch again to pursue photography full time and now my husband has been my biggest supporter. He and my daughter recently helped out at a wedding and that was very special. I also photograph homeschool graduations since I still have connections with friends from when I homeschooled my daughter. I love photographing high school seniors and families in the beautiful natural backdrops of Colorado.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle in starting the photography business has been keeping up with social media as I prefer to just go out and take photos but the greatest benefit has been the opportunity to connect with others and share some of the things I have learned along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love working with high school seniors because they are a bit adventurous and hopeful for the future. This is the time in their lives they get to enjoy with their friends and family and it’s so important to capture their youth and activities they have been so passionate about. I was recently published in Senior Muse Magazine and featured on the cover of their Facebook page. I also love working with families and children since I was a Sunday school teacher for many years and just adore those cute chubby little hands and cheeks and capturing the love and connection between mom, dad, siblings, and grandparents. I think what sets me apart from others is that I love creating unique experiences for my clients so that no two sessions are completely alike. I spend time getting to know my clients with a consultation and styling suggestions to help bring out the best in them.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My biggest risk was simply putting myself out there on social media. Creative work is somewhat personal because I put my heart and soul into what I do and pour over each photo, tweaking it, sometimes for an hour before moving on to the next one; It’s the perfectionist in me that sometimes slows me down from taking too many risks.
