Life & Work with Bethany Demello of Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Demello

Hi Bethany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
At a young age, my brother had bought his first DSLR camera and I was so intrigued by it that I would sneak into his room to grab the camera and take photos around the house. It was always just a fun hobby to me! Fast forward, I married my husband Brian in 2016. We endured multiple miscarriages throughout the first few years of our marriage and experienced our last one in 2019 right before the pandemic. Due to infertility, Depression crept into my life and it took an emotional toll on me. I felt hopeless. It was during that time that my brother bought a new Canon camera and gifted me his old one, the same one I use to take pictures with as a kid. As I have always had an eye and interest for photography, I took the time while being quarantined to teach myself the ins and outs of the camera. I quickly learned how much I loved it and wanted to turn it from a hobby to a business. Photography helped bring me out of my depression and showed me that there is beauty and joy in the little things. I began doing shoots here and there, receiving a lot of positive feedback and it propelled me forward to today where I am doing family and lifestyle photoshoots and I love every second of it!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life has a way of bringing its own unique obstacles and challenges. Losing a baby brings an unimaginable amount of heart break and there are no words for the grief and pain you feel. The road certaintly has not been easy for me. I believe the trials that I have walked through have taught me to be vulnerable in life. I feel there is strength in vulnerability and it has helped form deep connections and relationships with my clients that creates comfortability during their session and that to me is so important!
Starting a business can be very scary, stressful and overwhelming at times. There can be a lot of self doubt, “can I do this”, “am I adequate enough for this?”, “am I ACTUALLY good at this?” All of these thoughts plus some have definitely slipped into my mind. Receiving the reassurance and confirmation from my family and friends alongside people that follow my photography saying that I was meant for this is all I needed to keep going! I am thankful for the community around me.
Last, but most importantly God is my source of strength, especially on days I feel I can’t do it. I believe He brought photography into my life to heal my broken heart and to bring happiness to others. God has a beautiful way of turning our trials into triumphs and that is my continuing story.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a family and lifestyle photographer. I love to use natural light to create dreamy and timeless photos. I specialize in family, maternity, newborn, couples and engagements.
My style of photography is all about the emotion behind the images. There is beauty found in the quiet in between moments and the genuine laughter by just having fun with your loved ones. I pride myself on capturing the candid little moments that bring the authenticity that I love and I trust my clients will as well! I enjoy serving others and bringing happiness to their lives, so finding I can do that through photography means the world to me. My goal is to capture your special and natural bond with your family or significant other, so when you look back on these photos you feel the emotions all over again!
I strongly feel that everyone deserves to have photos to look back on. So many times people pass up on having photoshoots done due to high prices and feeling it’s unreachable. I want to give everyone the opportunity to have beautiful high quality images that are affordable and don’t break the bank.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love living in Colorado Springs. It has beautiful scenery and unique locations that are ideal for photographers and clients. The mountains are within traveling distance and give many opportunities for the most captivating photos. While Colorado is perfect for my kind of photography the weather can be challenging as it can be very unpredictable. It has helped me to be more flexible and come prepared to give my clients the best experience!
