Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Keasler.
Hi Beverly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I fell in love with the art of photography from the time I took a photography course back in high school, working with old school film and developing portraits in a dark room. Technology has come a long way and I have found it difficult to keep up at times. My first camera was a compact canon point and shoot that I took everywhere, day dreaming of the day that I would be a well known wedding photographer in my small town. I moved away from that small town in Oregon to Colorado where I met and married my husband in 2010. He cared about my dreams and bought me my first DSLR. I practiced on my family and friends and went through seasons of shooting everything, to letting my camera sit for months at a time. My good friend Lindsey Nubern began pursuing photography and it was one of the many things we shared an interest in. I swear she could be a life coach because she can encourage and inspire any soul to chase after their dreams based off a few very intentional questions. After a coffee date with her I found myself creating a facebook business page, branding my business name, ordered professional business cards and had her design my website. It was somewhat official and eleven years later I can see how I’ve grown and overcome fears that have held me back. I’ve had to pinch myself with the jobs I’ve landed because of my perseverance and my willingness to not give up on myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography is a competitive industry and it’s easy to compare your work to others. I have to remind myself that trends are loud and fast, but vision is quiet and enduring.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I know that some people say that you need to find your niche as a photographer…to find one thing and be great at it. I’m sure there is truth to that but I have found so much joy in the versatility I have created in my business. I know my limits but I also know when I am capable of trying something new. I would say a majority of my work is family, maternity, and senior portraits. I am really intrigued by branding and product photography and would like to work with small business owners and photograph their creation and hear their stories. Last year I was honored to be a second shooter for wedding photographer Cassidy Osborne. I learned how hard and demanding the day of weddings could be but also how rewarding it was to be a part of someone’s love story and witness so much joy in a single day. It was an experience I will forever be grateful for and I am hopeful more opportunities will arise. Another pinch myself moment was the opportunity I had last year working with a dahlia farmer (Dianne’s Dahlias) shooting the different varieties of dahlias to market and sell. I was able to work on it with my good friend Lauren Jones, sharing the workload and enjoying and admiring the flowers that were the fruits of this amazing woman’s dream. Every session I do, I do it with heart and integrity. I cry and laugh with my clients in the tender moments and in the stressful ones. I enjoy hearing peoples stories and walking with them through all the seasons life brings us.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I would like to continue working at a pace that prevents burnout and that keeps me engaged. I always want to love what I do and resist chasing the next best thing photography has to offer. I don’t do a lot of marketing so I mainly depend on referrals and I’m very grateful for my families that return year after year. I give all the glory to God who has given me this gift and who has placed wonderful people in my life because of it. I pray that he will continue to give me direction and guidance, and that I would continue using this gift as a creative outlet and a source to bless others.
