Today we’d like to introduce you to Canyon’s Echo Marita Gomsrud and Shawn Nelson.
Shawn started playing a song for some friends at an intimate gathering and as he was singing he heard Marita singing along softly. The resonance was felt at this moment and sparked a creative connection and the beginning of their musical journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been windy with an occasional fork in it. Stage fright and personal relations have been challenging at times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We feel deep gratitude in being able to organically share through our lyrics the struggles we’ve gone through in this human experience. This is something we hold close to us and love about creating music together. We both understand what it feels like to go through suffering and our music has been a way for us to connect on a deeper level. We are like a mirror reflecting each others stories and then sharing it with the world together.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Shawn’s favorite memory from childhood is with his brother singing around the fire in the Topaz Mountain Range in Utah…singing to the stars with the moon as their spotlight.
Maritas favorite childhood memory is with her twin sister Mariel and her little sister Lisa. The three of them would put on an in-home talent show full of singing and dance…all to entertain their parents.
