Life & Work with Cindy Vo of Denver, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Vo.

Hi Cindy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a huge interest in all things beauty growing up so as soon as I graduated high school I enrolled in esthetician school while also going to college full time. Once I became licensed, my interests moved on from more than just skin and I ventured into lash extensions and permanent makeup. After I was doing permanent makeup for a couple years I started thinking about actual tattooing. Ever since I decided to take that leap it’s been great! I mainly specialize in fineline tattoos nowadays but I still do my other esthetic services on the side as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely a bumpy road and it still is. Trying to grow my business while pursing my college education is super difficult. It feels like there’s never enough hours in the day. Especially when I was newly licensed, it was extremely difficult to bring in clients. I juggled 1-2 part time jobs while building up my clientele and going to college full time for a few years. I’m so grateful I have been able to grow my business enough to allow me to do it full time and ditch my part time jobs so I have a little bit less on my plate. However, I still always have this constant battle of whether I should go full force to continue to grow my business and put school on the back burner for a bit or vice versa.

Another reason why it’s still such a bumpy road for me is, I think because I had such a bumpy start and it took me years to get to the point where I could do my business full time, I had developed insane imposter syndrome. To this day, I still feel like I’m not good enough quite often. I tend to overthink and it’s just an icky feeling I can’t quite shake just yet for some reason despite my accomplishments thus far on my business and tattoo work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently mainly specialize in fineline tattoos and it’s what I’m most known for. I think what sets my work apart from others is how fine and dainty I do my tattoos, which is what I’m most proud of. My skills and knowledge with single needle continues to grow more and more everyday allowing me to produce such fine dainty tattoos.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have had so many wonderful supporters in my life. My family always held it down for me when I was struggling or if I was in a runt. They’re always reassuring me and even encouraging me in those hard times to take new trainings, learn a new technique, and hopefully become re-inspired and a bit more confident especially due to the bad imposter syndrome. I’ve had a handful of amazing mentors throughout my years in business that has helped shaped what I do and how I got to where I am today. A mentor of mine, Holly, actually gave me the push I needed to get into tattooing. I’m not sure I ever would’ve seen myself tattooing but she saw the potential I had based on my permanent makeup work and without that push I don’t know where I’d be today. Tattooing has changed my life in so many ways for the better. Another mentor of mine turned friend, Amy, is the kindest soul I’ve met. She continues to push me, retrain me on certain skills if I need it, sends me words of encouragement when my imposter syndrome is eating me alive, and she allows me to just rant, talk, and bounce ideas off of her. I’m just so grateful for the clients, mentors, and friends I’ve been able to connect through tattooing and even my other beauty services.
