Life & Work with Daizsa Caldwell of Nederland, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daizsa Caldwell.

Hi Daizsa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I like to think that my story began in the soil. I was born in Fresno, California, a place where the horizon stretches wide with orchards, vineyards, and fields that hum with life. My childhood memories are steeped in the smell of tomatoes on the vine, the sound of my grandparents’ laughter in the garden, and the rhythm of family dinners that revolved around what we had grown ourselves. I didn’t know it then, but those small, sun-drenched moments were planting seeds in me– seeds of connection, nourishment, and care.
Growing up, I was surrounded by abundance, yet I slowly became aware of how unevenly that abundance was shared. Access to fresh, healthy food was not a given for everyone. That realization has stayed with me — a quiet motivator behind much of what I do today.
Alongside this love of food and community, I’ve always had a pulse for movement. Sports were a constant thread through my life, teaching me teamwork, resilience, and joy in effort. Water polo carried me into college — a sport as demanding as it is exhilarating — and I think it taught me as much about community as it did about strength. In the pool, every movement depends on someone else. That lesson has echoed far beyond the water.
Fast forward to now where I’ve been part of the Nederland community for four years, and from the moment I arrived, I felt the mountain air call me to action. This place has a wild, magnetic energy exuding a blend of creativity, grit, and deep-rooted care. I dove right in, eager to build connections and create spaces for people to gather, collaborate, and celebrate one another.
At heart, I’m a gatherer. I gather stories, people, flavors, and ideas where I find magic in watching them mix, grow, and transform. Nederland has become my home, and my life here is really just an extension of that garden I grew up in: tending, cultivating, and sharing what blooms.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As someone who is neurodivergent and dyslexic, I’ve spent much of my life learning to see the world differently. Growing up in special education programs and receiving speech therapy taught me perseverance and adaptability. There are moments when I still second-guess myself — whether it’s data on a spreadsheet or a big life decision — but I’ve come to recognize that my mind’s unique wiring is actually my strength. It allows me to think creatively, make unexpected connections, and lead with empathy. I know what it’s like to feel different, and I use that understanding to help others feel seen, valued, and included.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
This was my first year serving as the Market Manager and Co-Lead of the Nederland Farmers Market, and it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. Managing the market involves coordinating many moving parts, from vendors and volunteers to events and community partnerships. I’m fortunate to work alongside two incredible teammates — we complement each other’s strengths and support one another where needed. We’re also guided by an outstanding board of long-time members who each bring valuable experience and passion to the market, which has been a cornerstone of our community since 2016.
I specialize in vendor management, social media, fundraising, community engagement, and curating events that connect local producers with our town in meaningful ways. I’m most proud of how our team has strengthened relationships within the community and created a market experience that feels welcoming, collaborative, and vibrant.
I feel my strength lies in helping vendors, customers, and community partners come together to create something that celebrates local culture and sustainability. I lead with collaboration, creativity, and gratitude, and I’m continually inspired by the collective energy that makes the Nederland Farmers Market thrive. I’m proud to be a small ripple in such a mighty market, and I deeply appreciate the care that goes into making it all happen. Our community truly comes together and shows up in so many ways — I couldn’t do it without my team; it truly takes a village. I look forward to coming back for future seasons!
