Life & Work with Erin Wyrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Wyrick.

Hi Erin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated from Paul Mitchell in 2018 and almost gave up my cosmetology career after failing my state board test twice. But I decided to try for a third time, passed, and received my cosmetology license. After I was licensed, I continued to be a stay-at-home mom for about a year, not sure when I would have the opportunity to practice my craft. In early 2019 I began working inside of the Cottonwood Center for the Arts for an amazing hairstylist and artist, Leanna Tuff. She has been in the industry for over 40 years and taught me so many valuable skills. One day between clients, she asked me what my biggest dream was. I told her that my dream was to have my own salon where hairstylists could feel like the artists they are, and where I could do the hair services that I love to do. A week later she brought me up to an empty studio 236. Leanna said that I no longer had a job with her and that I had to open my own salon in the largest studio inside of the Cottonwood Arts Center! Wildflower Salon was born a short three weeks later, and the rest is history.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We opened in 2019, right before the 2020 pandemic. The pandemic hit us hard, but I was able to keep business afloat without charging my booth renters a single dime in rent while we were forced to close. We only were open a few short months before we had to temporarily shut down, and while I was terrified of losing my dream, I knew that if I just pushed through, my team and I would make it through.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in blondes, fashion colors, and “unconventional” haircuts. I’m most proud of my abilities to connect to my clientele and booth renters individually. I think that’s what sets me apart from other stylists or salon owners, I truly love my people and love to invest in them. When you’re in Wildflower Salon whether you’re a stylist or a client, I want you to feel free to be your true authentic self.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
When I was in high school, I read “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls. It’s a great story about struggle and perseverance, I think about that book a lot when I’m facing obstacles.
