Life & Work with Georgina Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina Miller.

Hi Georgina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My story started on the other side of the Atlantic in Europe. After studying French and German at Oxford University, I began my marketing career at a PR agency in Germany. Once I had worked there for a year and a half, I moved back to the UK and worked in London for six years in various PR agencies. At the end of 2015, I moved to Colorado and that’s where the real adventure started. I freelanced for a while and then became Head of Marketing at a hospitality tech start-up. At the end of 2019, the company was acquired and at the beginning of 2020, I decided to strike out on my own. Things were going according to plan until March 2020, when, like everyone else, I learned the true meaning of “pivot”! Now I work with clients that range from the very local, here in Golden where I live, to nationwide. I also work a lot in collaboration with other marketing professionals, which I love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started my business just before the COVID pandemic hit the US so my first year of business did not go exactly to plan. I had to rapidly reset my expectations for the kind of business I was going to bring in and reassess how I was going to reach my target audience in a virtual-only world. Everything was suddenly online and I needed to make a new network from scratch, virtually. So that’s what I did. On the plus side, as a marketing consultant, my business is not capital-intensive so I was lucky enough to be able to be flexible and not have to lay off employees or worry about a storefront.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty is helping companies get out of a rut and work things out. Often, they want to grow and they know they need marketing but don’t know what they should be doing. I help them reconnect with who they are, identify their audience, and work out how to reach their potential customers best. After that, I help them develop their messaging and write great copy for them that will attract the right kind of customers or clients. Everyone wants to know what kind of social media they should be on, or if they should be doing print advertising, but each time, it comes back to who they are and who they’re talking to.

Also, I have a kick-ass team that helps take clients on the whole journey, from brand strategy, graphic design, messaging, marketing strategy, to delivery.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in setting up my own business is to find your people. It’s not easy though and it might take a while. My advice is to try lots of different types of networking and see what works for you, but if you don’t feel a connection, move on. There are many, many different types of networking out there and you will find the right group for you eventually. Try to find people you like and whose work you respect. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – none of us can do this by ourselves and people like to help out. Equally, be prepared to lend a helping hand occasionally.
