Life & Work with J.R. Hess of Loveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.R. Hess.

Hi J.R., so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been interested in art and have pursued this path ever since I was very young. I attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Center of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have worked for a handful of animation studios, one of which being Disney. I’ve always considered myself an illustrator, and within the past few years, have incorporated my love for illustration and now enjoy doing hyperrealism wildlife and western portrait work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definately not been paved. I am often surprised at how little I know about the art world after having a lifetime of being an artist. Being able to handle the pressures and deadlines associated with being a professional artist are often challenging. I have learned that the art world is a game of inventory. Having the ability to produce work efficiently even when your work is not selling is the true test.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Over the past few years, I have enjoyed doing photo realistic portraits of wildlife and western figures. I love being able to capture the dramatic details of life and nature. I work primarily in colored pencil and soft pastel staying true to my love of illustration. I enjoy shedding light on an often overlooked medium in the art world and showcasing its possibilities.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I spent many years living off grid on an island in the Pacific Northwest. This is where my love for wildlife began. Being able to document and sketch all the different animals that were a part of my daily life was an amazing experience.
