Today we’d like to introduce you to Janette Lopez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started with my love of the industry through my dad. He was a barber and shop owner as well. I enjoyed the laid back work environment and everyone seemed to genuinely love their job! As time went on, I developed a love for nails and wanted to take a shot at doing my own at least. I researched the few YouTubers doing nails at that time and decided I could do it too. Instead of becoming a nail tech, I went for my cosmetology license with intentions of being the best at all the industry had to offer. I didn’t want to do just one thing I was interested in all of it! Going straight from school to a shop paying booth rent definitely wasn’t the easiest. You have to adjust fast and gain clientele to make a living. Becoming your own business basically. As time went on, I had to learn my way around marketing and social media. And from there started creating my brand. Currently, I am working on my craft by continuing education, creating content to educate others, and expanding my brand.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I love this industry so much but it definitely has had its ups and downs. Raising a family and balancing work has been one of the biggest struggles. You have to make time for everyone and for yourself. A lot of work goes into creating a healthy clientele base, working long hours and you typically take your work home with you answering calls, messages, and creating content after hours. You have to stay relevant and that requires time and energy. Balance is key!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think I am most proud of being well-rounded in the industry. I take pride in the fact that I don’t have to turn many people away regardless if they need a haircut, makeup, nails, braids, or color service. I am a one-stop shop. I would say at the moment I specialize in event hair and makeup and I am probably most known for being a braider in my area. Being an educator has set me apart I love to share my experiences with others and I love to create how-to content to help the future generations of the industry or just anyone wanting to learn in general.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If I could give advice to the person starting out in the beauty community, I would say be yourself. Don’t conform to what you see others doing. Don’t be afraid to have your own style and do things your way. This space is about standing out and the way to do it is to follow your passion. Consistency is key if there is something you want to try step out of your comfort zone and do it full speed ahead you never know what you might really enjoy and be amazing at!
