Life & Work with Jeff of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff.

Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing was founded by Jeff and Rebecca McKenna in 2022.

Jeff has had a passion for fishing from a very early age when he lived in Illinois. Spurred on by his father and grandfather, young years on the water were impactful. After Jeff received his first fly rod as a gift from his dad, everything changed!

Colorado called Jeff’s name and he relocated to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 2003. Coupled with his love of fly fishing, rivers, and a passion for the outdoors, his passions have continued to grow in the state. Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing specializing in guiding on the Colorado River, the Roaring Fork River, the Grand Mesa with high alpine lakes, and private fishing areas as well. Jeff met his now wife, Rebecca, in 2004, and it was in 2014 they eventually married. Together with their two sons, Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing is a mom-n-pop, family run business and fly fishing outfitter! Not only operating in the summer months, Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing offers ice fishing in the winter. Not into fishing? They can teach you as well as provide all the gear to learn. Really don’t want to learn but want to be on the river and see wildlife and have some nature time? They offer leisure float trips as well!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Jeff’s experience in the guiding world is vast and his retail management experience has been a bonus to running a business as well. There has been few challenges but overall, the road has been smooth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Jeff was a retail manager at Sportsman’s Warehouse along with being the manager of a local fly shop for many years. His attention to detail and creativity in retail has got him thinking and putting together great ideas for Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing and to keep it fresh and fun. He’s known to some in the fly fishing world as “River Jesus” for his wavy long hair (albeit rather grey!). He’s compassionate, knowledgable, and fun on the river. Jeff travels around the globe taking clients to fish and hosts trips to remarkable places. Colorado West Slope Fly Fishing is a year-round fly fishing and conventional fishing outfitter on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains.

How do you define success?
Defining success is something that is individual for each person but to define success for me is to bring my passion of fishing and teach others the skill and experience the “tug” and what it feels like to get hooked! Being able to teach others and bring them joy in something I love doing feels like success to me. Yes, making money is valuable, too! But, when I get to be on the river or high alpine lakes — be in the outdoors, see wildlife, help clients catch fish, and come home to my family every night – that is success!
