Life & Work with John Freeman of Longmont

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Freeman.

John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I founded Abba’s Creations Photography in 2011 I had been actively involved in photography for over 45 years, since my teenage years. I had always leaned towards landscape photography. However landscape photographers are a dime a dozen and there are tens of thousands of photographers all trying to capture that perfect photo that will be a top seller. I recognized that if I was going to do landscape photos I needed to find a niche market withing the field of landscape photography.

In 2010 I discovered a style of photography that allowed me to create extremely large photos that would be ideally suited for creating ultra high resolution wall murals. This style of photography required shooting dozens to hundreds of photos that would ultimately be stitched together to form huge photos that could be printed mural sizes while retaining the detail found in an normal 8″ x 10″ print. Over the past 15 years I have perfected this art and regularly produce photos that are record setting sizes that are among the worlds largest images ever made of most of the locations I photograph.

In May of 2025 I embarked on a new project. Using the skills I perfected over the previous years I sat about creating a online virtual reality tour of Rocky Mountain National Park. Virtual Rocky Mountain National Park is a groundbreaking interactive virtual tour of one of America’s most popular and spectacular natural environments – Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The project is unique in both the depth of its coverage and the quality of its imagery.

Virtual Rocky Mountain National Park is a work in progress started in May 2025. Ultimately it will allow online visitors to experience dozens of locations within RMNP and its surrounding areas, in all seasons. The 360° interactive panoramas are all presented in high resolution, so viewers can zoom in and out to see details, and can pan fully around, including looking upward and downward. Dazzling views from the tops of Trail Ridge Road with its famous cliffs and 11,000 foot vistas will eventually be available, along with peaceful locations along trails and in well-known parts of RMNP.

Virtual Rocky Mountain National Park remains an ongoing and expanding online location experience, with updates and further coverage being added regularly. It is free to the public with no advertising or ads. It is my gift to the visitors that visit this page on my website. https://abbascreationsphotography.com/virtual-rmnp/

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I have embarked on the Virtual Rocky Mountain National Park project probably the biggest challenge is getting to various back country locations in the park. There are some 750 miles of trails in the park. I just turned 75 and have had heart issues since I was 55. Hiking to some of the more remote locations is a challenge for me. My goal is to create virtual tours for as many locations and this old body will allow me to over the next couple of years.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My photos are among the World’s Largest Highest Resolution Images in the Landscape Nature Photography Realm. My Gigapixel photography refers to images that contain at least one billion pixels. Some images approach 15 Gigapixels. These photographs are created by carefully capturing hundreds or even thousands of individual high‑resolution images and digitally stitching them together into a single seamless panorama.

My proprietary gigapixel techniques allow me to produce:

Extremely detailed panoramic landscapes.
Wall murals that can be printed at very large sizes without loss of clarity.
Fine art images suitable for immersive interior spaces.

This process combines precision capture, focus stacking, panoramic stitching, and meticulous post‑processing to achieve results that traditional photography cannot even come close to. When viewing one of my wall murals up close it can feel like you could literally walk into the photo.

Clients choose Abba’s Creations Photography for:

Exceptional image resolution and detail.
Expertise in mural‑scale photographic production.
Reliable technical execution of complex projects.
A thoughtful, purpose‑driven artistic approach.

Whether displayed in a corporate lobby, church sanctuary, healthcare facility, or private collection, each image is crafted to be both visually compelling and technically enduring.

My business, Abba’s Creations Photography, was founded in 2011 with the purpose of using photography to reflect the beauty, scale, and intricacy of the natural world. I view photography as a way to share the handiwork of the Creator, producing images that invite viewers to slow down, explore fine detail, and experience landscapes in a deeper and more immersive way.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Because Gigapixel photography is such a unique niche it is incredibly difficult to find someone that can mentor you. When I started out you could count the number of photographers doing this style of photography on one hand. I networked with Arron Priest, one of the first people to attempt this style of photography. Today, worldwide. there are maybe 30 people that specialize in this type of photography. Most of us have galleries on VAST Photos at https://vastphotos.com/

To the best of my knowledge, I am the only person in the world that teaches this style of photography. In the past I have taught workshops on Gigapixel photography in Ouray, Colorado.

In Dec., 2025 I released a “Gigapixel Panoramic Fine Art Wall Mural Photography Online Workshop” that for $249 is available to anyone that is interested in learning how to do this style of photography. You can learn more about the workshop at this link: https://abbascreationsphotography.com/workshops/
