Life & Work with Julia Duckworth of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Duckworth.

Hi Julia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Colorado native who’s always been artsy and absolutely loved being creative. Therefore, I knew I was going to be an artist, and luckily, attending Universtity of Colorado – Boulder helped me find my creative outlet through photography. It all started with film photography, falling in love with the magic in the darkroom. After college, I did a couple of internships with wedding and portrait photography companies, which helped me fine-tune my skills. Now I am a Colorado-established wedding destination and elopement photographer, capturing people’s moments that last a lifetime. I’m their personal photographer cheerleader as people go through important milestones in their lives!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road; it’s a very competitive and saturated photographer’s market in Colorado (with the gorgeous Rocky Mountains we have, it makes sense!) Having my name out there has been a struggle, even to this day. I’m working hard at making sure my website and social media accounts are all up to date and represent my work as it is these days. They say there’s always something to do, especially as a business owner, and I make sure to give myself grace when I complete a task!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a wedding, elopement, and portrait photographer based in Colorado, as well as an international elopement photographer. I’ve documented Canada, Iceland, and Italy as well! While I do the big day events like weddings and elopements mainly, elopements are what I feel I’m more known for! I absolutely am so proud of the international shoots, as that’s my main goal, to be a travel elopement photographer. I am inspired by everything alive around me – people, landscape, and love! I was born profoundly deaf and wear Cochlear implants that help me hear and communicate. I say to people often that I “hear with my eyes,” thus bringing my talents and devotion to how photography is used!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Hopefully, more elopements internationally! I would love to fill my passport with more countries checked off! I’m always looking at trends in the photography world, and while some don’t speak to my brand, I do adapt to most and make it feel “mine” still. This is done by listening to what my clients are looking for on their big day and creating those moments into art.
