Life & Work with Kristin Wilbourn & Alexis Cline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Wilbourn & Alexis Cline.

Kristin Wilbourn & Alexis Cline

Hi Kristin & Alexis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Alexis and I met when our children were in a music class when they were 6 months old. We quickly became friends and loved watching our families grow together. During the pandemic, we were doing some soul-searching at a local park about future dreams, ambitions, and the kinds of examples we wanted to set for our children.

Alexis said that she would love to start her own business, and I chimed in with, “Well I have always wanted to have a kid’s pajama company”. She looked at me and said, well what should we call it? What was that cute nickname you called Charlie when he was a baby?

I said SnugPie and she logged online and bought the domain right then. I had a moment of panic but quickly embraced the excitement.  Alexis is very much a yes, let’s go do it type of person, and I am much more reserved and want to think everything out first. But that is what makes us the perfect partnership.

We care about our planet, every child’s comfort, and making the most snuggly soft clothing your little one can grow, have fun, and relax in.  As two moms with five kids between us, we’re always thinking about our little ones. How to keep them cozy, special moments with them, and how to make their adorable clothes last.

SnugPie was designed with all of this in mind, especially maximum comfort and durability. We took our time developing the perfect Hygge-Dream fabrics. Our blends are made with bamboo and organic cotton; giving them a super soft and cozy feel which provides extra durability that you don’t find with bamboo alone.

Kristin: I’m a Kansas City native, enjoying life in Parker, CO with my husband, two sons, and daughter. I’m passionate about spreading kindness, being cozy, and matching jammies for all of my kiddos. A couple of years ago, I began wondering what my next project would be once my kids were in school full-time. I may have jumped the gun, considering my youngest is just 2 years old and wasn’t even born at the time…

Nevertheless, super soft, environmentally friendly jammies that would last for all three of my kiddos was an idea I couldn’t shake. I shared it with Alexis, and within hours, SnugPie was born. It’s been such a fun and rewarding experience working together to develop a company with products that we truly believe promote a greater sense of wellness for families. We’ve put so much love and care into our products, and sharing them with the world is a joy.

Alexis: I’m a Texas native who quickly fell in love with our life in Colorado! After raising my baby girls there for the last 8 years, our family made an unexpected move to Louisiana. Now, we’re adjusting to life in the South! I’m passionate about loving people, taking care of our planet, a good book, and finding the perfect margarita.

I was all in when Kristin shared her idea for SnugPie with me. I have two girls, ages eight and six, who both struggle with sensory sensitivities. They were a big inspiration in our pursuit to develop the perfect fabric and style of our clothing that would meet their very high standards for comfort. For instance, our two-piece pajama set has only flat seams and no tags, so nothing irritates sensitive skin.

The past few years have been an incredible journey as Kristin and I worked together to develop a sustainable, comfortable, affordable product that we’re both proud of. We’ve learned a lot as a team, and I’m so grateful we took this leap of faith together. I hope you enjoy SnugPie just as much as our families do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Nothing about this journey has been easy. We had no idea where to start. We had no experience in business, fashion, design, or anything that would help us in starting our own clothing company. We decided to invest our own capital and had to take a leap of faith. We wanted to find the right fabric and didn’t want to have the same thing as everyone else on the market. We wanted to improve it.

Finding the perfect blend of organic cotton and bamboo was challenging. We were asked multiple times to compromise our original idea for something that would be easier. We also wanted to be as sustainable as possible, from the development of our fabric through all the packaging for delivery to our customers. We wanted to use organic cotton and organic dyes. We were also steadfast that the bags we chose to use were compostable and the tags were made of seed paper. We worked with a lot of people who were supportive but also had their own ideas and visions. We had to support each other in standing firm to what we knew was right for us.

Getting the right fit was also extremely difficult. We needed these products to be comfortable, durable (think…no holes!) and fit well. There were many rounds of samples and back and forth between our manufacturer and us. We were particular with every detail. Securing a quality manufacturer that was willing to work with a brand new company was difficult because we needed to have small minimums and high quality. We were a small fish in a big pond!

When it was finally time to have our product shipped to the U.S. we ran into a lot of difficulty with understanding the customs process and making sure we had all the correct paperwork in order. All of this was happening while we were in the middle of raising 5 children with so many activities and different school schedules.

Among all the challenges we have had with developing a small business we have had personal bumps in the road that have proven to be obstacles as well.  Alexis got news last year that her family would be moving to Louisiana, which was a huge obstacle we had to overcome both emotionally and professionally.

Simultaneously, Kristin was in the middle of receiving hard news about the health of one of her children. There were a few times when we questioned if moving forward with the business was the right option, but thankfully one of us would always help pull the other out of that period of worry, and we have always managed to work through it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At SnugPie, we’ve embarked on a pursuit to redefine children’s clothing with luxury and sustainability at the forefront. Our mission is simple: to provide top-of-the-line, sustainable fabrics that cater to both the needs of parents and the comfort of children.  While our initial plan was to establish only a pajama line, our journey took an unexpected turn when we witnessed our daughters’ sheer delight in twirling and playing in their dresses.  This inspired us to expand our offerings to include twirl play gowns, adding an extra layer of joy to everyday adventures.

As parents ourselves, we understand the importance of quality clothing that lasts and prioritizes comfort, especially for children with sensitivities.  That’s why every stitch of SnugPie clothing is crafted with care and attention to detail.  As founders and hands-on owners, we’ve taken on every aspect of this venture, pouring our hearts into every task from social media management to inventory and development. Our journey as two regular moms with a vision has led us to create something truly extraordinary, filling a gap in the market for durable bamboo clothing that exceeds expectations.  We’re thrilled to see our dream come to life and to offer families clothing that not only look good, but feels good too.

Hygge (hue-gah) n. a quality of coziness and comfort that brings a feeling of contentment or well-being.

Our exclusive Hygge-Dream fabric is all about getting consciously cozy, taking care of those you love, and indulging in life’s simple comforts and pleasures. Our fabric is unique and our prints are all original artwork. Our two-piece pajamas are carefully crafted with flat seams to ensure maximum comfort without any irritation.  The twirl play gowns feature charming ruffle details and wide skirt that’s perfect for spinning and playtime.  Every detail is infused with love and thoughtful consideration.

What does success mean to you?
We’ve created more than just a clothing brand; we’ve built a community centered around comfort, quality, and care.  Our journey is a testament to the power of passion and resilience, and we’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved.  For us, success goes beyond business metrics; it’s about making a positive impact on our families, our customers, and our planet.  Through SnugPie, we hope to inspire others to embrace the simple pleasures of life and cherish every cozy moment.
