Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Munro.
Hi Kristine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started out as a shy little girl who was afraid to speak up. I was born in Canada from immigrant parents and grew up looking different than the other kids in school. I was shy and lacked confidence. I mention this part only because, today, people tell me differently – That I look confident all the time and seem like I have it all together. The truth is, I don’t always feel confident, I don’t have it together all the time, and it’s an everyday work in progress to show up confidently. I feel it’s important to spread the message that everyone has what it takes within them, they just have to make a conscious effort to go after what you want.
As I grew older, I gained more confidence. When I was in middle school I told my parents I wanted to be a model, or be on tv. I loved posing for the camera and loved making homemade videos on the camcorder (I’m dating myself, haha). With my parents being immigrants who came from poor families, their belief was that I needed to do something in business or finance to be successful. I ended up taking business in College, majoring in Finance. I worked in corporate accounting, then later in real estate financing and development.
For 19 years I followed what my family and society wanted me to do, not particularly what I wanted to do.
For 19 years I was unfulfilled, constantly searching for my passion and purpose, wondering what it could be.
For ten of those years, I put on my entrepreneur hat and built a real estate equity financing and home building company. I built a 7-figure business, won industry awards – yet still felt unfulfilled, searching for passion and purpose.
Four years ago my husband had an opportunity to start a business in Denver. I thought it would be a great way for me to spend more time with the kids and find a business I could do from home. So we uprooted our family with our 2 young kids and moved to Denver.
I started dabbling in things I enjoyed like makeup and wine. I got into network marketing/direct sales selling beauty products and wine. I focused on learning everything I could about how to use social media for my business. I was becoming more obsessed about social media (Instagram) then I was about my actual businesses. So much that I decided to create a course on Instagram for entrepreneurs.
During this transitional period of starting a new career from scratch, I still often felt lost. Still searching for passion and purpose. I decided to invest in myself in coaches/mentors and putting myself in communities with like-minded women entrepreneurs that were going through the same struggles I was going through.
Once I dove into the personal development work on myself with coaches, and community is when I started to see growth in myself, then in turn, growth in my business. I started an Instagram Agency – Close on Social, that manages social media content for Real Estate Professionals. I get to do creative work I love to do through media, while also tapping into my 19 years of real estate experience.
Because of the huge transformation and finally following my own voice I experienced through coaches/mentors and community – I knew I wanted to create a community here in Denver for other women entrepreneurs to experience huge transformations in their lives. I wanted to create a space for women to have easy access to mentors, and like-minded women who know what they are going through, for support, accountability, mentorship and collaboration, in order to thrive in life and business.
In January of 2022, Business Bosses who Brunch was born. A community to connect women entrepreneurs who dream big on a deeper level. A community that goes beyond networking. Every month we meet, either for brunch or to workshop. To support women in both personal development and business strategies.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. Life is an up and down roller coaster, especially entrepreneurship.
From having a career making a good income but feeling unfulfilled to starting from scratch making no income and struggling to find my way – feeling lost, lacking clarity, imposter syndrome, and not having support in the past from friends/family.
Business Bosses who Brunch – I specialize in connecting women entrepreneurs to themselves, and to each other. This community is known for connecting on a deeper level beyond surface level and beyond networking. We do a quarterly brunch with inspiring keynote speakers, with monthly workshops in between to support the women in both personal development and business strategies.
I’m most proud that in just 6 months, the community has connected deeply in the way that I had intended. I just didn’t know it would happen so quickly. I love the energy of the women in the room at each event. And I love how fulfilled I feel after each event knowing the ripple effect of the impact the women have told me they are receiving.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters is that I know and remember that I matter (I didn’t always know this). If I know I matter, it then affects the way I show up for my family, my husband and kids. To lead the way for my kids as a good role model, and show up for my friends and community – to create an impact and a ripple effect for others to learn and grow, face their fears, know that we can achieve anything we want to achieve.
