Life & Work with Lance Colbruno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Colbruno.

Lance, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story starts in 2015 during my sophomore year in high school when I had joined video production class. I learned how to do simple edits, the basics of cameras, and audio to create the school news and short assignments. I knew shortly into joining that this was something I wanted to pursue and it had felt natural to me. I loved it, I pushed myself, and later on, I was able to win awards in the district and for Scholastics. It didn’t matter if I was running to get food or directing the entire shoot, I just wanted to be a part of it. School felt second hand to film. Towards the end of senior year, I began creating my own videos on YouTube but wanted to push into directing music videos. I immediately had the idea to search for artists and asked to collaborate. This sparked friendships within the music scene out here in Denver and Aurora allowing me to work more with them, soon after I graduated in 2018 and began applying to any posting about working in a film production. This led to production assistant jobs and even landed one to help with a Kanye West Sunday service. I began pushing my resume soon after and began getting offers to direct a variety of content. Come 2022, I’ve had the opportunity to create visuals for films, ads, events, music videos, and fashion.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has been pretty smooth. The main struggle I dealt with was “Where do I start?” This was what made me reach out to new people and go straight into what I could learning hands-on. Nothing is better than creating and learning through trial and error.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a director who films and can edit. The focus within my work is to create something that tells a story and can become remembered through time. This is why regardless if it’s a film or advertisement I push to make each their own. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the opportunities that have gave me the experience in order to do so. What sets me apart from others is that I can pay attention to the details and direct my visuals with purpose.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I’ve been positive and observant of everything around me. Taking everything in and seeing that a lot was possible if you put your mind into it. I was heavily into video games and YouTube. Early on I wanted to create video games or make videos but didn’t have the tools at the time. Growing older I aligned myself with people that had similar interests and help me build today.
