Today we’d like to introduce you to Lila Tresemer.
Hi Lila, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The business is a non-profit, transdenominational temple called The StarHouse. My husband, David Tresemer, was the primary visionary and founder from 1990 to 2024 when he passed. We were married here in 1995, and together we built a vibrant culture around a most remarkable sacred site! We steward 105 acres in the foothills above Boulder, and we are a sanctuary for the sacred, which honors “Earth, Stars and Human Hearts.”
We offer many indoor events as well as walks in the surrounding wild and outdoor sacred sites (a labyrinth, a dodecahedron meditation chamber) that are open to our members, or to those who are attending a workshop. We have been a destination for thousands of visitors in the 36 years since we opened, and are one of Boulder’s best-kept secrets! Our Mission engages people through direct knowing and deep remembrance of Universal Principles, sacred union, and stewardship with all life. Our public events invite people to experience new and full moons, yoga, music, sacred dance and solstices and equinox celebrations.
The StarHouse itself is a 12-sided building, perfectly oriented to the Pole Star, and thus to the four directions. We have ongoing programs both in person, and online that engage with topics like The Sacred Feminine Quantum Journey; the 12-Senses; Kirtans, Gong Baths; Star WIsdom and others.
We work with principles, not dogma, and those include sacred geometry, the stars, the seasons and a deep awareness of the wisdom of the natural world. We are surrounded by trees and wildlife, and offer sanctuary to many (though we are not wide open to public visits due to our sensitivity to neighbors and traffic…appointments or attendance at a public event is requested.)
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road over 36 years would be a miracle, I think! Yet, we have survived and thrived through Co-vid, the passing of the primary founder, and financial uncertainty! Since we are somewhere between a Church, a theater, a nature-conservancy and an outpost for “sacred culture”–we don’t fit a simple category. We have a very small staff who are on salary, and a large collection of fantastic volunteers.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would personally say that I am an artist/creative person. This story has much to do with the StarHouse, and this temple has given me an opportunity to develop ceremonial trainings, seasonal celebrations, online courses and video programs (I was trained as an audio-visual producer in LA). But the greatest gift has been the development of a community of mult-generational humans who are incredibly diverse, and who are sensitive towards the stewardship of the earth, among many other talents!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Boulder has been my primary home for 35 years, since 1990. I originally came to town in 1969 to go to CU, and life took me to CA for some years after that. I love the easy access to the mountains; I love the culture that started to thrive in the late 60’s that defined the health food industry, the yoga and spiritual connection, the Buddhist university that brought so much interesting programs and teachers to town, the artists and athletes who thrive here. I love the Pearl st Mall, and that we are fundamentally a community who cares about the earth and her resources.
