Life & Work with Lindsay Burke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Burke.

Hi Lindsay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A rolltop desk FREE off of Facebook marketplace is where my journey started! I’ve always loved making and creating things and when I saw this horrid, drenched in green paint desk, I knew the vision I had for it in my head was possible, I just needed to try! I finished that desk and the feeling after I stepped back after tightening that last screw on that fresh new handle… I was hooked, I needed to keep that feeling going, so I did… and Schitt to Shine was born!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road? Hahaha!!!! Is there such a thing??? If there is I certainly prefer the bumpy, challenging, learn some schitt as I go road! Ya’ know for sure, not every piece I go to refinish goes as planned, and it’s simply because it “wanted” something else… yes, furniture talks! There is a reason a paint color you thought would look great, doesn’t, or a veneer piece actually ends up being laminate and your while idea is botched, that’s the furnitures way of saying, “Nope… I want this!”

Struggles… ya’ know through this furniture journey, I’ve felt things in my soul I’ve longed to feel for myself, so I went to therapy. Instead of me shining furniture… I started shining my schitt. We all have schitt, WE ALL HAVE SCHITT. I am no better than you and you are no better than Wanda down the street! We all have schitt to work on to work through and ill be forever grateful for my furniture flips ’cause now inside, I feel as good as my furniture looks on the outside!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a wife of a firefighter, mom of four and I shine my schitt in between all that! I have a booth at Old Crows Antiques in Littleton where I shove it full of all my pieces and I’ve had such a fabulous time being there! It’s been over a year now having a booth and it fills all my creative cups!

I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made at the booth and through my Instagram handle @schitt.to.shine, I’ve “met” people that are inspiring, encouraging, supportive and REAL. We all shine our schitt together and it’s a place for me to just be… full of schitt or not!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Schitt to Shine… man… well. ya’ know I’ve always wanted to write a book… so I’d like to do that! Schitt to Shine isn’t just about furniture… it’s about SHINING YOUR SCHITT too! We all have relationships we wish were different, situations we wish weren’t or were better, and shining your schitt means time to dig deep and figure your schitt out already! You don’t have to settle… you can want more and just freakin’ go for it!

And sometimes… that voice in our head needs its schitt shined… the schitt we tell ourselves is the most crucial and telling! It’s how we function… make decisions… how we feel about ourselves and interact with others… and sometimes that inner voice does damage!!! So… switch that schitt up! You are in control and you can change how you think about your schitt and others!

I think the new trend coming straight from my schitt to shine people is evolved, humble, open, driven, focused people that acknowledge their schitt and work every day to shine it.
