Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Roberts
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first learned what a doula was during a doctor’s appointment several years ago. I started researching to learn more and was drawn to the career for many reasons. During my research, I felt drawn to the work of supporting families during labor and delivery. I also learned that the lack of support for mothers during and after delivery was very high in my community, but I had my career set.
After training, I was met with resistance from the nursing community in our small rural Illinois community, but I kept advocating for my career and my clients. I took a hiatus for a few years, but I was again drawn back to the career I first had my heart set on, doula work. I have now been serving the Denver area for 4.5 years, and I haven’t looked back. I do birth work and postpartum work with clients in our community. It brings me such joy to give families support in their birthing journeys.
I stay educated in my field by taking up-to-date training and continue to work on certifications to help my clients achieve their goals for their families.
I am certified in birth, postpartum, and placenta encapsulation, but I also have training in mental health for the family. I also have training in end-of-life doula work as a grief specialist and have been educated in doing advance directives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been some obstacles when starting my business. For example, the biggest one was finding a company for training that aligned with my values and the commitment I wanted to have for my clients. After a lot of searching, I found the Allo Academy and did my training there.
Also finding clients was a little bit of an obstacle at first but networking, and signing on with a few agencies has helped with this.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a doula, I am able to help guide my clients on their journey of postpartum. I guess what I hear most from my clients is I’m reliable, in so many aspects of their care, as I care for the whole family even pets.
I’ve made great friendships with my clients and stay in contact with them as they continue their journey.
My favorite part of my job is the updates from my clients on how things are going and of course pix of the little ones.
Being a doula is a great part of my life and as I continue to achieve my goals, I continue to stay educated in various fields that relate to my doula work.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My success is attributed to many things, such as the mentorship of some amazing Doulas, networking, and educating myself in the many fields that would support my families.
And finally being able to support and meet my clients where they are has been a very large contributor to my success.
