Life & Work with Macey Cherry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Macey Cherry.

Macey Cherry

Hi Macey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Being born and growing up in a small town in Australia, I had always been very musical all through my childhood and school years playing the flute and curating the sound boards at school plays. My family was always super lively and always very musically influential and creative.

It’s funny looking back on how it progressed but essentially I started moving towards electronic music and loading my friends’ iPods with new music and making CDs for their parties, which eventually of course grew into virtual DJ sessions as soon as I got my first laptop. After finishing school, I enrolled in a full-time course named the dual Sound Production and Music Business Diploma where I ended up being the first female to complete the course becoming the face of said course for the entire state.

From there on out, my production and DJ journey sort of took off in my small town in Australia where I was booked for all kinds of shows, festivals, and support slots. This is where the creative vision in my production sparked in such an intense way that I was able to sit there long enough to learn how to enjoy the process of writing electronic music and how to do it in the ways that worked for me.

I always think about how each track I write is in some way better than the last, it’s always a work in progress. You just get better over time, which is sometimes annoying, but when you look back at your entire discography, you can see you have come pretty far with an art that can be pretty testing sometimes. Since then, the production journey has led me to be blessed enough to receive the title of poster girl for Touch Bass Australia and New Zealand 2023

This included being the face of the entire poster and campaign for the country and supporting Rezz, SVDDENDEATH, MACKY GEE, HEDEX, and WRECKNO. Shortly after playing this massive show, I moved overseas where I lived between Toronto, Canada, and Denver, US. After visiting Australia for Christmas, I will be back in Denver in the New Year as I love the city, Nightlife, and people there.

Whilst I am missing Australia, I am blessed to be able to have felt the inspiration of the festivals I’ve attended in the US, with that I’ve been able to infuse an entirely new EP, a next year full of lined-up releases, and hopefully some international shows.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
All though nobody can control where they were born, and I love being Australian, the VISA process can be pretty daunting for us. For me, it often feels like everyone around me is at an advantage, but I try not to think about it in such an unfair way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I predominantly write bass music at about 140 BPM. With me, essentially I will often prioritize the general flow of the track as a whole in my work. The organizational structure is crucial and one of the most important parts of the process for me, due to this, I will always try to have my music sitting in a way that speaks to me structurally or I will literally throw the tune out and start again. I’m very cut-throat with it sometimes.

I specifically like to work a lot with heavy bass sustains and quarter note stabs or chugs (there are a lot of different terms for the specific sound I am meaning). Putting it basically, I love to layer all types of sustains and quarter notes and equalize or mix to a point where they are all sitting in their dynamic range and each element of the sound design can shine. I love the actual process of laying all of my sound design out but then I also love the process of tweaking various plug-ins and having just the ability alone of accessing infinite sound.

My work is known to be unique although I have toned it back to a more graspable sound design era in the coming years, I love that I am still able to bring the vision whether that be kingdom hearts, cute anime, or scary, hard-hitting, heavy bass. It has taken some years but I am finally where I want to be with my production and I am excited to release more this year and next.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Authenticity and patience are the key.
