Life & Work with Madison French

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison French.

Hi Madison, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My work revolves around film and drama, my current school major, which began when I was quite young. As long as I can remember I was making short sketches or films with my friends and family. It’s been second nature. From small short films to film portions of East High School’s Little Shop of Horrors to winning a theatre competition at east combining live theatre with film. It’s been incredible and I couldn’t be more grateful I got involved and fell in love with the art and have kept it for so long. It was surreal to go to film school and get accepted on my 18th birthday. It was a full-circle moment and I can’t wait to see what is coming next.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think my biggest competition is feeling confident, especially in a male-dominated creative industry. The mental toughness required to go into the creative industry alone is outstanding, let alone in film or theatre. It’s never been blatant displays of the patriarchy, but it can daunting to be the youngest in the room and the only woman. Additionally, I think mental health as an extension has been a challenge. Finding the right people who always support you has had its ups and downs but I am grateful for where I am now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I was reached out for my photography, but I recently have spent time developing my film and drama skills. I am most proud of a short play I put on for a high school competition, a play of All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury. I turned the play into a live theatre show with film elements throughout. It was incredibly moving and I couldn’t have been prouder of that show. It was for a competition I had the honor of winning, but truly the experience alone was worth everything. Recently, I am in the middle of developing a film festival in Manchester, England while directing and acting in school shows, taking one to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. What matters most to you?
I believe having a kind heart is the most important thing. When used well can change the lives of those around you. You never know what somebody is going through and showing them kindness and understanding can change everything. I don’t think anything is as important as a good heart and kindness.
