Life & Work with Maria Lopez of Pueblo Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Lopez

Hi Maria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
-I’m an artist.
-my art website is www.lopezme.com
-I’ve been a professional artist for 25 yrs.
-I’ve been a local art celebrity in Pueblo for 15 years.
– I was an adjunct Art Professor at CSU-P.
– I was a small business owner in historic Union Ave in Pueblo for 2 1/2 years. My art gallery was named Artcorp.
-I paint and draw.
– I have an MFA from Boston University and a BFA from University of Colorado, Boulder.
-I taught free art classes at the Rawlings Library with Art4healing.org curriculum trying to get it going in Colorado. I taught kids, teens, adults and senior citizens.
-I’ve been looking for a good job with a livable salary and benefits since 2019.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
-Art professional isn’t that respected in the USA. I thought getting degrees from highly-accredited, prestigous universities would always insure me getting a good job. I still owe student loans and am very poor.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I can paint most anything. I’m a classically trained artist. I paint in oils, and acrylics and draw with charcoal, pen, pencil and oil sticks.
I paint Transformers, Superheroes and pop art. I paint still lifes of flowers, fruit and vegetables too. I paint contemporary urban landscapes of small businesses and mountain scenes too. I’m a very diverse artist.

Any big plans?
I currently feel jaded. I haven’t sold much art. I don’t feel that people value my art or my art skills. I have depression. I’m trying to snap out of it, and keep going. I tend to paint in series. Abstract art series, fruit series, bird series, Transformer series, Urban landscape series. I haven’t painted a new series in a while. I don’t really see the point.
