Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Harris.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting beside my grandma, watching her create beautiful watercolor pieces — I was mesmerized by how she could bring color and emotion to a blank page. Art has always been my creative outlet, a way to unwind, express myself, and connect with others.
After moving to Colorado, I stumbled upon the Denver Chalk Art Festival about 13 years ago, and I was instantly captivated. The vibrant colors, the energy of the crowd, and the way artists transformed ordinary pavement into incredible works of art completely inspired me. I told myself, “I want to do that someday.” Not long after, I applied, participated, and was hooked.
Since then, I’ve had the joy of participating in the Denver Chalk Art Festival for over 11 years, as well as numerous other chalk and painting festivals in different communities. Over time, what began as a personal passion evolved into something bigger — I started a small art business, creating murals, commissioned pieces, and custom chalk art for others.
Beyond my own art, I teach special education to children with higher needs, and art has become a key part of my teaching. I use it as a way to help my students communicate, build confidence, and find joy in expressing themselves. I’ve also had the opportunity to teach a chalk art summer camp for elementary-aged kids and lead chalk art classes for high school students, which has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
One particularly meaningful project was being invited to collaborate on artwork for another elementary school’s art auction, where I combined my own work with student pieces to create something truly special. Seeing the students’ excitement and pride in being part of the creative process was unforgettable.
Art has truly woven itself into every part of my life — as a passion, a profession, and a source of healing, connection, and inspiration.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path definitely hasn’t been easy. Finding where to start with a business was intimidating — there’s no guidebook for turning a passion into something sustainable. I often struggled with self-doubt and the fear of not being “good enough” to succeed.
Balancing everything has also been a challenge. I’m a full-time special education teacher and a mom of four, and carving out time for art sometimes feels impossible. There are late nights, early mornings, and moments of wondering how to keep it all going.
On top of that, I’ve faced personal health challenges, including a breast cancer diagnosis. That experience changed me in many ways — but art became my outlet through it all. It gave me strength, peace, and purpose during some of the hardest times. Creating helped me process what I was going through and reminded me of the resilience and beauty that can come from struggle.
Every obstacle has ultimately shaped who I am as an artist. The challenges have deepened my connection to my work and made every creative moment even more meaningful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work spans a variety of mediums, but I’m especially drawn to creating large-scale pieces that make an impact. I create vibrant chalk art murals, wall murals, and commissioned artwork in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Each medium allows me to explore different textures, moods, and techniques — but chalk art has become what I’m most known for. There’s something magical about transforming a blank stretch of pavement into a colorful, larger-than-life piece that connects with people in real time.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come as an artist and of the journey itself. Every piece I’ve created reflects lessons learned along the way — from early mistakes to valuable tips and inspiration shared by other artists I’ve met over the years. Each experience has helped me grow, refine my style, and push myself creatively.
What sets me apart is the heart I put into every project. Whether I’m working on a mural for a community space, a commissioned painting for someone’s home, or a chalk piece at a festival, my goal is always the same: to create something that sparks emotion and connection. My work is deeply rooted in storytelling, color, and the joy of bringing art to unexpected places — especially the streets where people can experience it up close.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I feel like stepping out and starting a business was definitely a big risk for me. Art can be such a challenging field — there’s a lot of uncertainty, and putting your work out there for others to see and judge isn’t always easy. You’re really sharing a piece of yourself with the world, and that can be both exciting and vulnerable.
I wouldn’t say I’m naturally a big risk-taker, but I’ve learned that taking risks is often where growth happens. Starting my art business, applying to festivals, and saying “yes” to opportunities that felt a little outside my comfort zone have all pushed me to become a stronger, more confident artist.
Over time, I’ve realized that not all risks have to be huge leaps — sometimes it’s the smaller, everyday ones that matter most. Trying a new technique, experimenting with a new medium, or taking on a project that scares me just a little — those moments are where creativity really expands.
Lately, I’ve been learning to lean into those risks more, to explore new dreams and directions for my art. It’s not always easy, but every time I take a chance, I discover something new about myself and what I’m capable of.
