Life & Work with Pete De Boer of Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pete De Boer.

Hi Pete, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started working in recording studios in New York City in 1998, beginning as a staff assistant before moving up to engineer. In 2001 I went freelance as a producer/engineer, which gave me the chance to work on a wide range of projects. My wife and I moved to Colorado in 2009, and since then we’ve built studios in Breckenridge, Arvada, and now Lakewood, where I continue to produce and engineer records.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been an interesting road. The music industry has changed dramatically—both in technology and in how people consume music. The tools we use in the studio are constantly evolving, and at the same time the way artists make a living has shifted. Social media and marketing have also become part of the job for both artists and studios. I think the biggest challenge has been learning to constantly adapt while staying true to the creative side of the work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a producer and engineer who specializes in helping artists make records that feel authentic to who they are. My background spans both analog and digital recording, but what I’m known for is combining the best of both worlds—using vintage gear like our Rupert Neve console and tape machines alongside modern tools to capture something timeless. I’m most proud when an artist leaves the studio feeling like we didn’t just record their songs, but elevated their vision. What sets me apart is that I see my role not just as a technician, but as a collaborator—someone who helps guide, inspire, and create a space where the best performances naturally happen.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I want to continue building a space where artists feel inspired to create their best work. I’m excited to keep pushing forward with both analog and digital recording, finding new ways to blend tradition with innovation. I’d like to bring more national and international artists into the studio, while also continuing to support and develop local talent. Beyond that, I’m interested in expanding the studio’s reach through educational content and storytelling—helping people better understand the craft of recording and why it still matters in a world that moves so fast.
