Life & Work with Rebecca Scarbrough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Scarbrough.

Hi Rebecca, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in San Diego CA. My father was a blind diabetic all of my life however before he went blind, he was an amazing artist. So, you can say I got my talent from my daddy. I drew doodles in high school, nothing great or of serious caliber. I moved away to South Dakota with my now ex-husband raised 3 children, divorced, and moved back home. I then met my current husband who was in the Navy and is a pretty amazing artist himself. He reignited my artistic side and I soon began drawing again and dabbled in painting. I have tried to sell my art on eBay, Facebook, Instagram, and in several arts shows but have never had a whole lot of success. My husband and I moved here to Colorado in October of 2019 and we love it here. My two daughters live here so it was an easy move for me. I work for a healthy grocery store and enjoy my position as a produce manager. It’s been hard to stay motivated with my art but I have learned that it’s more for me than to make money at it. I recently participated in an art show at Spectra Art Space in Denver and even though my pieces didn’t sell I very much enjoyed the experience and will now be looking forward to participating in many more in the future.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth. I have struggled to keep motivated but I use my art as a therapy for my fibromyalgia. I also suffer from severe anxiety and PTSD so some days it’s extra hard to get motivated but once I do it’s then hard to stop. Health and having to work full-time have been my biggest obstacle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a produce manager for a health food grocery store. I am responsible for making sure there is fresh fruits and veggies for my customers each day. I won first place in a Taste of The Tropics contest last year in August for our region after only being the manager for 8 months. I strive to always be honest and supportive with everyone around me. My art reflects my personality and things I enjoy.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Tacos make me happy. Food, in general, is my happy place, I love to cook and challenge myself on complicated recipes. I love making people happy through my art and my food.
