Life & Work with Ruth Sonnenshein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Sonnenshein.

Ruth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in the NYC magazine world where I honed my eye while working for Glamour and Jane. I continued in the magazine and entertainment world as an LA-based wardrobe stylist before moving to Denver to focus solely on interior design after having three kids.

My design company, Wyatt Designs, Inc., creates spaces with a California contemporary vibe focusing on texture and an eclectic mix of high and low, old and new, and materials and patterns derived from anything ranging from marble to grasscloth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. The biggest obstacle for me as a designer is finding good people to execute my design. I’m only as good as my installers and I have had to learn the hard way with some people.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love natural stone and incorporate all elements in a clean and updated way. I am constantly thinking of things that would enhance any space and have been pouring over magazines since I was a child. My before and afters are always a vast improvement and such a fun way for potential clients to see what I can do!  I’m passionate about wallpaper and mixing patterns against a clean slate. I do a lot of white walls and then go from there.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
There is not a vintage store or Goodwill that I don’t go into, using any nuggets I find in my client’s homes. I often sell things from my own home if I think it’s perfect for someone else.
