Life & Work with Sally Weiss of Fort Collins, Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Weiss.

Hi Sally, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my cosmetology journey in 1988, studying at Hair Dynamics Education Center here in Fort Collins. After gaining experience and skills, I opened my salon, Old Town Hair Company, in 1997. Over the years, I had many clients ask me where they could get high quality and realistic extensions and wigs. There was something missing in our community. So, in 2008 I started my alternative hair journey and I wouldn’t change it for the world. After countless hours practicing, attending conferences, and taking training courses, I will be accepting my Masters Certification from the American Hair Loss Council in September 2025.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve had so far, would be finding like-minded stylists that want to step into the vast community of alternative hair. It’s not an easy thing to do, and it requires many, many hours dedicated to learning and improving your skills. The learning should never stop. Another challenge I happily face regularly is finding the right solution for each individual client. Everyone is different, and that applies to hair loss, too. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and often I’m combining options to create the most realistic option for my clients. However, after years in the hair loss industry, I have a lot of tools in my belt and have found my favorite distributors and products to make it much easier. Additionally, another huge challenge was COVID, we were shut down for a while, and once we were open again it was extremely hard to get supplies, wigs, and hair. We still feel the effects from it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Education never stops for me. After getting my cosmetology license, I continued building my skills with Toni and Guy Ambassador Program, American Crew Men’s Barbering and Cutting Techniques, and the International Hair Academy for Men’s and Women’s Hair Replacement and Design Techniques. I also have taken many special training courses in human and synthetics hair prosthesis, hair extensions, and color correction. I have also partnered with two non profit organizations: Wigs for Kids and Hope Live’s. Hope Live’s is a local organization providing support and resources to people battling breast cancer in Larimer and Weld County.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Making others feel good about themselves is a rare treat, and one that I get to enjoy everyday at Old Town Hair Company. Listening to my clients unique stories gives me a glimpse into who they are and how to transform their image to meet their lifestyle. In my salon, we challenge ourselves and our creativity every time a client shares their vision. Our clients are the reason we love this career!
