Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Briegleb.
Hi Sophia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
After having three kids, I found myself experiencing a lot of chronic pain in my hip and pelvis that increasingly limited my activities and eventually stopped me from any high-impact exercise even though I was only in my 30s. I spent eight years with a variety of practitioners trying to solve the problem and ultimately what helped the most, got me out of pain, and gave meaningful exercise back to me was Pilates.
Because of its profound effect on me, I trained to become a Pilates teacher and opened a studio so I could share the benefits of the method with others. The studio started off in my basement with one-on-one sessions to about twenty people and expanded into The Stanley Marketplace where now seven teachers work teaching group classes and private lessons. In seven years, we have taught over 30,000 lessons!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After a couple of years of teaching, I completely lost my voice and needed vocal cord surgery. As soon as that was resolved, the pandemic struck. Like all small businesses, that was a very challenging time for a fitness studio. But my determination to help others and spread healthy movement remained strong throughout. Where there is a will, there’s a way.
We adapted to offering more online options and although I became an exercise instructor because I like to move, I sat in front of Zoom like the rest of the world and tried to do my job. Teaching virtual Pilates actually taught me a lot and although losing my voice and running a business in a pandemic were some of the worst things to ever happen to me, they are also some of the best things as well.
I learned a lot, I was forced to be more flexible, I became more creative, and I’m a better person for it. Just like exercise shapes the body through physical challenges, life challenges also have the opportunity to shape us.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Many people who end up in a Pilates studio have already tried many options to resolve their pain or problem. Sometimes we are their last hope. I am proud of how the Pilates Method helps us problem-solve for difficult situations. I am proud of how through movement, we can offer hope. I am proud of how we help people heal and change lives.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have lived in Denver for over twenty years and in Colorado for most of my life. I love how fit and healthy people are here. Everyone already understands the importance of exercise and caring for the only body you have, so it’s the perfect place to own a fitness studio.
