Life & Work with The Cake Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Schreiber

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Cake Company opened its doors January of 2021 in the heart of historic down town Castle Rock! If you haven’t been to old town Castle Rock, it has the charm of a hallmark movie and the real life vibes of one too! The previous establishment closed their doors mid 2020 due to covid but Megan didn’t let that scare her as she put forth plans to reinvent the space, completely re do the interior, and start something she knew this town would love! And love they do! We have received so much love and support from family, friends and most of all the community!

Megan and I, Lauren, are sisters and Colorado natives who both had a love for the arts in school. I pursued my passion for working with clay and studied Art Education in college. Megan found herself working and learning cake artistry when she was 17 and has never looked back! This sister duo didn’t necessarily work out at first. We tried to make something out of a home bakery in 2015, but I had very young kids at the time and Megan was in between out of state schooling and jobs-so it just fizzled out. Fast forward 6 years- I was working from home and raising kids, and Megan was back to her roots in Colorado dating her now husband -both of us wanting more than what we were doing in our professional lives, but weren’t 100% sure yet of what that was.

Seriously, it was like the universe aligned and the opportunity to work together and in a real brick and mortar came to fruition. Megan had her eye on our current location in Castle Rock knowing it was the only space special enough for our vision. Then it happened! The space became available and the real work started! The concept of the store, recipes, and experience was all Megan and the knowledge and experience she had gained up until this point and I was here to support it any way I could. We pitched her ideas to our family who helped us get the store on its feet and we have never looked back! Our little shop has evolved drastically from that first day. Re-investing in ourselves and what we want to offer the town has been our best decision and the reason we continue to grow and succeed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We might have the answers in the kitchen but running a business is no joke! Every year we learn from past mistakes and we build on that. Our biggest issue is our space limitations! This has been a struggle as we have continued to grow over the years. We have maxed out our space and it is so hard to turn customers away because we simply don’t have the space to accommodate more orders, especially during the holiday season! It really breaks our hearts- we love our customers and hate to disappoint them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We make cakes, cupcakes, pies and cookies at our shop with a focus on wedding cakes and custom cakes. When customers come into our shop for the first time I always tell them that we are not your normal bakery with our cupcakes and cakes. All of our desserts are refrigerated (which is a foreign concept to some) because we fill our cakes and cupcakes with a cream based mousse and top them with mousse instead of heavy buttercream! Our #1 selling cake and cupcake is our version of “Better Than Sex”. It is a chocolate cake filled with caramel, has a sweetened condensed milk soak, and is topped with our signature white chocolate mousse and heath candy! We don’t take credit for this recipe as being original (it’s all over pinterest!) – but we are proud that we have made it our own and a staple grab with the majority of our customers.

Our custom cakes have also been a huge hit! We have clients that reach out to us every year to place their kids’ birthday cakes with us to match their party! There is nothing better than “growing up” with our customers and getting to be a part of their wedding, baby shower, then kiddos birthdays!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Taking the leap from an at home business to a brick and mortar was a huge risk, especially since businesses were suffering so much from Covid. We felt that the community would want and have a need for our services and through research felt we were going to make it, but you never really know for sure until you try!
