Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeno Matsumoto.
Hi Zeno, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started having an interest in art and music when I was a little kid. My grandmother and mother made sure that my siblings and I always had something to do. I come from an impoverished background so I didn’t always have access to the tools and equipment I would need to use to produce art and music.
Today I find myself in a place where I can start to make my great escape from the constraints of poverty and finally focus more on my creativity to create works of art. My passion is singing and playing music but I continue loving the art world and what it has to offer. One of my favorite artists is Bob Ross. Something about the way he allows you to free yourself in the canvas is something special. I too would like to try my hands in multiple mediums.
I’m currently working to save capital for a stable place to write and record music. I have had to make some major sacrifices in order to prepare myself for all the hard work and time that will come with producing art and music. I haven’t given up on my dreams and goals. I’m just trusting the process one day at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Alan Watts once said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Well, my road to my artistry and music has been paved with bad spending habits(Bills), low self-esteem, and cyclical discouragement. The struggle of trying to find others to work with in music and trying to find space and time to do art has been a challenge. I’ve been houseless(homeless) off and on throughout my life and I have always let my art and music slide to the back burner, especially before the pandemic.
For now, I am working DoorDash by bicycle after having lost all my equipment and vehicle due to a multitude of situations and incidents. DoorDash gives me the flexibility and convenience of making money on my time and by bike. This is the struggle along the way but I continue pushing on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multi-instrumentalist. I sing. I play guitar, bass, piano, and drums. I’ve played in multiple Metalcore bands in Daytona Beach Florida circa 2012. Played at the Deland Rock and Metal Festival with a band called Catcher and the Rye in 2013. Covered Good Charlotte in a band called Her Armor for Emo Night Daytona in 2017. Right now I’m working on a solo project.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Art and music makes me happy because it allows me to express so much joy and emotion. It’s therapeutic.
