We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matthew Kuehlhorn. Check out our conversation below.
Matthew, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly—my wife and kids. It’s the connection with the people I love most. We’re in a rhythm right now that feels meaningful. Whether it’s dinner together, spontaneous moments, or just sitting around laughing—those little interactions recharge me. Running a business can pull you in a hundred directions, but they’re my anchor. When I’m with them, I’m reminded why I work so hard in the first place. It’s about building something worthwhile—at home and in the world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name’s Matt Kuehlhorn—I’m a dad, a husband, and the founder of Kooler Garage Doors. We’re not your average garage door company. Kooler exists to simplify homeownership and build stronger communities through craftsmanship and obsessive customer experience. We don’t just fix doors—we protect homes, elevate design, and give families peace of mind.
My background’s in education and nonprofit work, so serving people has always been my DNA. But I got tired of the red tape and mediocrity. I wanted to build something that actually moved the needle. I started Kooler with a paintbrush and a garage door install manual, and today we’re scaling a brand that delivers amazing service to homeowners across Colorado.
What makes us different? We care more. Our service feels like hospitality, not a transaction. We’re crafting a lifestyle brand around the most overlooked entry point of your home—the garage door. And we’re building something that can grow into a national powerhouse, all while making sure our people and customers feel seen, safe, and served.
We call it Craft Your Life™—because that’s what we’re doing here. One door, one relationship, one bold step at a time.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
There’s no single person—my understanding of work has been shaped through a few key influences at pivotal moments in my life.
Keith Cunningham was a wake-up call. I was staring down bankruptcy, and his teachings hit like cold water. He helped me see that being busy isn’t the same as creating value—and that leadership is about thinking clearly, not reacting emotionally. That season of hardship taught me discipline, humility, and how to work on the business, not just in it.
Then there’s my grandpa, Al Wegenhardt—or “Weggy” as we called him. He passed years ago, but his legacy still lives loud in my head. He lived a life of service—quiet, consistent, no fanfare. He taught me that real work is about showing up for others. He wasn’t chasing status. He was building a life that mattered. I still try to channel that energy every day.
And finally—my kids. They’re the reason I even stepped into entrepreneurship. I wanted to be present. I didn’t want to be another dad chained to someone else’s schedule. Their existence sparked something in me: a drive to build, to create, and to own my time. Watching them grow keeps my ambition honest. I’m not building Kooler just to make money—I’m building a legacy they’ll be proud of.
Those three—Keith, Weggy, and my kids—taught me the heart, the discipline, and the why behind the work I do now.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of not being enough.
Not smart enough. Not capable enough. Not lovable enough. It’s a sneaky one because it wears different masks—perfectionism, overworking, indecision, people-pleasing. For a long time, I thought the solution was to just do more. Stack achievements, grow the business, be the provider, play the hero.
But underneath that drive was a deep fear: if I stop performing, will I still matter?
That fear has held me back from asking for help, from resting, from trusting others to carry the load. It’s cost me time, energy, and sometimes, connection with the people I care about most.
I’m still learning to face it—not by fighting it, but by recognizing that my worth isn’t tied to output. That being present, honest, and aligned matters more than being impressive.
Owning that truth has made me a better leader, father, husband—and a freer man.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Mediocrity is a choice—and most people are addicted to it.
Comfort, convenience, and low standards are killing potential. We’ve normalized settling. People think they’re doing “fine” because things aren’t falling apart, but they’re not really living—they’re coasting. And when you challenge that, it makes folks uncomfortable.
I believe we were built to craft our lives, not just survive them. That means choosing discomfort. Choosing accountability. Choosing to go all-in on something that matters. Most won’t. And that’s the truth.
But the few who do? They change the game—for themselves, their families, and the people around them.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
A man who gives a damn.
Without the title, the business, or the stuff—I’m just a human trying to love well, grow relentlessly, and leave people better than I found them. What’s left is the way I show up when no one’s watching. The courage to face hard truths. The scars that taught me. The fire to keep building. And the relationships that anchor it all.
Take away the noise, and what remains is presence, purpose, and the grit to keep crafting a life that means something.
