Meet Al B Johnson of Old Colorado City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Al B Johnson.

Hi Al B, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a later-day abstract expressionist painter and sculptor who has shown and sold work in most of the major galleries in Colorado Springs for the past 15 years. I had a studio for 12 years at Cottonwood Center for the Arts but the past couple of years I now have a studio at the Sluice in Old Colorado City. I have also been part of the Colorado Springs Rotary’s Flight program for the past 10 years and have produced over 30 painted butterflies and dragonflies for their charity auctions. These auctions have over the past decade have accumulated more than a million dollars for Rotaries charity grants that have greatly benefited the community. I have also designed and built several outdoor sculptures for different corporations and individuals in the community. Though I show my work primarily at Platte Collections Gallery in Colorado Springs, my work can also be seen and purchased at various other locations in the Colorado Springs area. I also teach classes at my studio location at the Sluice for those interested.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wanted to be an artist when I graduated from high school but I was told that I would probably never be able to support myself. So, I went to school and became an electrical technician and engineer for 35 years. Upon retirement, I decided to give it another try and being quite autodidact I taught myself how to do my art. I have been successful at it and enjoy doing it every day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Most of my art is abstract. I spent years studying the technique of artists that I enjoy and so I played with an element of their styles of art until I figured out how to do what I wanted using my own artistic voice and style. Not everything I do is the same but being multi faceted I try to explore different ways to express myself on canvas.
