Meet Alexandra of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra.

Hi Alexandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing Special Effects Makeup on my own in 2018 and wanted to create everything to really encompass each look. I began with accessories and even created press-ons for myself.
In 2020, I was working at a Mall and it shut down for months. So I figured, why not sell what I make to earn some much needed funds.
Since then, I have poured myself into my art and try to create things that are unique, odd and sometimes very silly.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think most of my challenges have come in the past few years. People are saving money more than ever — understandably so. With the uncertainty of the world right now, people can’t afford to buy things that aren’t needs.
I try to keep my prices to a reasonable level; but my art and jewelry is a frivolous want. Not a cart full of groceries. I get that. I’m just happy I can create in my spare time and make people smile.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve always been Alternative and describe my style as Indige-goth. I love Punk, Goth, and Metal. I think my art reflects that sharp aesthetic. I specialize in jewelry, mostly big earrings.
I got big on TikTok for cutting open doll heads and painting them in a gory way.
I love to work with organic items like bone, teeth, and indigenous pieces; such as Dentalium Shell and Snake Tongues.
I’m most proud of the big showy necklaces I’ve done. My favorite was the Human Teeth Necklace I made for a client – of her own teeth.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That my art isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. Some people only like “creepy” things during Halloween. I believe my work transcends being creepy and sometimes has a look at social issues and the beauty of death.
