Meet Amanda Squier of Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Squier.

Amanda Squier

Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in 2006 with high school senior portraits. Then, in 2007, I had the opportunity to do a little shadowing of Dawn Sparks at one of her weddings. Until that day, I never thought I’d enjoy weddings, but low and behold, I fell head-over-heels-in-love with telling the story of people’s love. I’ve rebranded a few times through my own life transitions, but I’m still here, doing the thing I love. I still photograph seniors, I still love weddings, and I absolutely adore photographing families as they grow and change.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Well, I’m not sure owning your own business is ever completely smooth, but I’ve been so fortunate to have some incredible, loyal clients come along for the ride. Because of them, I’ve been able to navigate everything from a divorce, being a single mom, an international pandemic, remarrying, and now running a business while raising teenagers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I photograph weddings, seniors, families, and boudoir. I would say I’m best known for my documentary approach which allows people to kick back and be themselves, whether they’re walking down the aisle, showing off their profession, or looking like their best selves on their best day. Lately on wedding days, it’s common for me to hear comments about people feeling calm once I arrive, or when timelines get sideways (as they often do), I frequently hear brides remark, “Don’t worry, Mom. Amanda has us, and she’ll make sure everything is perfect.” I’m so proud of the fact that people put so much trust in me, that they know they’ll be ok with me at the helm, that they’re able to stay calm and not panic during one of the most important days of their life. I like to believe that my reassurance allows them the ability to be present, and soak up every bit of their day like a sponge. Even when things aren’t going as planned.
With portraiture, I absolutely love being able to be my clients’ “hype girl”. People are so so beautiful, and they deserve to feel that when they’re being photographed. Whether they’re posing for the camera to have their launch into adulthood documented, or doing everyday things with their young kids while in pajamas and messy buns, (and everything between those stages of life) they deserve to feel that they embody beauty. Because I believe that they do.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think documenting life, or a day of life, as it unfolds without exuding control over the thing is a risk in and of itself. It requires me to anticipate, to feel, to turn down the “noise” in my own head, and just… watch as the magic of my time with my treasured clients unfolds. They, too take a risk by trusting me to make them look as fabulous as they are, while they do the things they do. But in our mutual risk-taking, I like to think that we meet eachother in the middle; both slightly outside of what others might see as being “comfortable”. I, myself, am completely comfortable and at ease with the “not knowing” because it’s where I thrive, but sometimes it does still make me nervous. But every time I get those butterflies, I remember that with great risk comes great reward, and that it’s normal to be nervous when you’re doing something important. And, for my clients, I’m not sure there’s anything more important than having their emotional highs, lows, and in-betweens be documented so that even people who aren’t born yet will remember how a moment felt.
