Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Harrison.
Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been doing ceramics off and on since high school. I loved pottery from the first time I tried it, and I kept coming back to it over the years. About six years ago my husband bought me my first pottery wheel. At the time we lived in a one-bedroom apartment, and I would throw on the wheel in our living room. It was a very rudimentary setup. The next year, we bought our first house, and I started setting up and building out my home studio.
I started getting a lot of requests from friends and family, so in 2018 I decided to start my business. I have an adorable fat cat, and I’m obsessed with him. So I decided to call my business Fat Cat Ceramics! Since then I’ve been focusing on growing my business through face-to-face events and word of mouth. It’s been a wonderful experience so far!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My current hurdle is making the leap to online sales. It’s the biggest question I get asked, and I know it is the next step. My hesitations are around setting up an online store and feeling confident in my packaging to ship pieces so they arrive in one piece. After this summer season though, I will take the leap!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I focus on functional pottery. I love making pieces that people will use and enjoy. I think it’s important for the pieces to feel good in your hands. That is one of the reasons why I really enjoy in-person sales. People have the opportunity to interact with pieces, touch them, and choose what feels right. The process of making pottery is so tactile and I think that extends to the use of the pieces as well; it should be a tactile experience.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I really enjoy completing commissioned pieces. The requests I get are often items I don’t usually make. These requests tend to challenge me or push me to try new things. I appreciate the opportunities to work outside my comfort zone.
