Meet Anna Markiewicz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Markiewicz.

Anna Markiewicz

Hi Anna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My photography journey is a tale of how a childhood pastime blossomed into a lifelong passion and career. It all began during my middle school years, thanks to my dad’s creative spirit. Every summer, he organized photo contests, and my sisters and I were the subjects of his experiments. Each week brought a new photography concept to learn – from the elusive rule of thirds to the timeless beauty of black and white photography, and the intriguing allure of top-down shots.

As the summers rolled on, my sisters gradually lost interest in these contests, but I found myself becoming increasingly captivated by the world of photography. It wasn’t just about taking pictures anymore; it was about capturing moments, emotions, and stories with every click of the shutter.

Throughout my high school years, I continued to hone my photography skills, often taking candid shots of friends and documenting our adventures. Yet, it wasn’t until my senior year that a pivotal moment occurred. A high school friend approached me with a unique request – to photograph her mother’s second wedding. She wasn’t looking for extravagant studio shots or posed pictures; she simply wanted genuine and heartfelt images to remember the day by. I agreed, not realizing that this would be the turning point in my photographic journey.

That wedding experience was a revelation. It allowed me to bridge the gap between my love for photography and my passion for storytelling. Capturing the genuine emotions, spontaneous moments, and subtle details of that special day was an incredibly fulfilling experience. From that point onward, there was no turning back.

For the past nine years, I have been fully immersed in the world of photography, specializing in portrait, wedding, and event photography. It’s been an incredible journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery. I’ve had the privilege of documenting countless love stories, capturing cherished family portraits, and freezing the joyous moments of various events.

Each photo I take is a unique chapter in my own story, reflecting the beautiful stories of the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’ve come to realize that photography is not just a craft; it’s a means of connecting with people, preserving their memories, and weaving their narratives into the visual tapestry of life.

Today, I find myself continually inspired by the people I meet and the moments I capture. My photography is a testament to the power of storytelling through imagery, and I look forward to the many more stories I have yet to tell through my lens.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the path of a photographer, particularly as a woman in this field, has indeed been an incredible journey filled with its share of challenges and triumphs. The photography world, like many others, has its own set of stereotypes and biases that women often encounter. While the road may not have always been smooth, it has been incredibly rewarding.

One of the significant hurdles I faced was the stereotype that photography is predominantly a male-dominated industry. Unfortunately, this misconception can lead to a sense of skepticism and doubt from some quarters. There have been instances where I’ve encountered individuals who underestimated my skills or didn’t take me seriously simply because of my gender. It’s disheartening when people don’t give you the same level of respect or recognition as your male counterparts.

However, I firmly believe that passion and determination are powerful tools to overcome such challenges. I’ve learned that as long as you’re deeply passionate about what you do and have unwavering self-confidence, no one can deter you from your path. Over time, I’ve realized that these detractors are often projecting their insecurities onto others. They may criticize or underestimate you because they wish they dared to follow their passions, just as you are doing now.

These challenges have only fueled my determination to prove that photography knows no gender boundaries. My work speaks for itself, and I’m proud to say that many of my clients have chosen me based on the quality of my portfolio and the dedication I bring to each project.

I’ve also been fortunate to connect with a supportive community of fellow female photographers and mentors who have been instrumental in my growth. We’ve shared experiences, offered guidance, and uplifted one another in a collective effort to break through the stereotypes and biases that persist in our industry.

Ultimately, every obstacle I’ve encountered has become an opportunity for growth and resilience. It’s a reminder that pursuing your passion with unwavering determination can not only shatter stereotypes but also inspire others to do the same. I encourage aspiring photographers, especially women, to embrace their love for photography and stand tall in the face of adversity, for it is our unique perspectives and voices that enrich the world of visual storytelling.

So, while the road may not always be smooth, I’ve come to appreciate the challenges as integral parts of my journey, making me a stronger and more determined photographer.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in capturing the beauty and essence of individuals, particularly those who may not initially feel photogenic or at ease in front of the camera. My work is all about transforming everyday people into models when they see themselves through my lens. It’s a truly rewarding experience to witness my clients’ confidence soar as they view the stunning images we create together.

What sets me apart from others in the photography field is not just my technical expertise, but my approach to making people feel comfortable and empowered during a photoshoot. I firmly believe that photography is a collaborative effort, and I strive to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where my clients can be themselves.

One of the aspects I’m most proud of in my work is the ability to evoke a genuine sense of beauty and confidence in my subjects. I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals who have never felt attractive until they saw the photographs I captured for them. Hearing such heartfelt feedback warms my heart and underscores the transformative power of photography.

One of the key elements that distinguish my photography is my hands-on approach to directing my subjects. I don’t just pose individuals arbitrarily; I take the time to explain why a particular pose or angle is beneficial, and I often show them comparative images to illustrate the difference. Simple adjustments like rolling the shoulders back or having the subject lean slightly into the camera can make a world of difference in creating inviting and flattering portraits.

Ultimately, what I’m known for is not just for creating beautiful images, but also for the genuine connections I establish with my clients. I pride myself on listening to their stories, understanding their insecurities, and working collaboratively to bring out their inner confidence and beauty. It’s a privilege to be a part of their journey to self-acceptance and empowerment through photography.

In essence, my photography is a blend of technical skill, artistic vision, and a passion for making people feel incredible about themselves. I’m dedicated to ensuring that every client leaves a photoshoot not only with stunning photographs but also with a renewed sense of self-esteem and a smile on their face.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking and finding a mentor can be instrumental in building a successful photography career, especially when starting fresh in a new city like Denver. Here are some strategies and advice that have worked well for me:

Connect with Local Photographers: Reach out to established photographers in Denver who might need assistants or second shooters for weddings and events. Many experienced photographers are open to mentoring newcomers and can provide valuable insights into the local photography scene. Offer your assistance and learn from their expertise.

Attend Photography Workshops and Meetups: Denver likely has a vibrant photography community with workshops, meetups, and events. Attend these gatherings to meet fellow photographers, both aspiring and experienced. It’s a great way to build relationships and learn from others in a casual and supportive setting.

Online Photography Forums and Social Media: Join photography forums and social media groups focused on Denver or your specific niche within photography. These platforms can be an excellent way to connect with local photographers, ask questions, and share your work. Engaging in online discussions can lead to meaningful offline connections.

Collaborate with Models and Creatives: Collaborate with local models, makeup artists, stylists, and other creatives. These collaborations can not only enhance your portfolio but also introduce you to individuals working in related fields. Building a network of creative professionals can lead to new opportunities and partnerships.

Location Scouting: As a photographer, location scouting is part of your job. Use this as an opportunity to explore the city, discover unique spots, and connect with property owners or businesses that may allow you to use their location for photoshoots. Establishing these relationships can lead to mutually beneficial arrangements.

Offer Your Expertise: Don’t hesitate to offer your photography services to local non-profit organizations, small businesses, or events. Volunteering your skills can be a fantastic way to give back to the community and showcase your talent to potential clients or mentors.

Online Portfolio and Social Media: Ensure your online presence is strong. Maintain an updated portfolio website and active social media profiles showcasing your work. This not only attracts potential clients but also helps you connect with fellow photographers and professionals in your area.

Be Open and Approachable: Approach networking with a genuine desire to learn and build relationships. Be open to conversations, ask questions, and listen to others. Sometimes, the most valuable connections come from unexpected places.

Remember, networking is not just about business; it’s about building lasting relationships. Denver is a city filled with creative individuals, and by actively engaging with the local photography community and being open to new experiences, you’ll find yourself building a network of friends and colleagues who can help you thrive in your new photography journey.
