Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Schenkein.
Hi Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After completing two degrees in Sociology and Spanish, I was working as a Spanish medical interpreter in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. On a whim, I started tinkering with jewelry while living there. I had no idea I would become a jewelry designer, but it all started as a young child by becoming fascinated with art, the world, and different cultures.
It’s incredible what seeps in as a young child. So, it didn’t seem like a wild idea to take my passion for jewelry and hone my skills while attending jewelry schools and an apprenticeship in San Francisco, Ecuador, and Buenos Aires. Eventually, I returned home to Denver, Colorado. Through jewelry design, I found a tangible way to create something from all these inspirations and globe-trotting adventures.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a fun, rewarding, and sometimes difficult journey with some highs, lows and everything in-between. While there are many small struggles while running a business, the most challenging years were only about 5-6 years ago, well into my career as an entrepreneur. Business was doing well for many years, and sales were increasing yearly.
Then, I hit a patch where, looking back, I was overly comfortable with the direction of the business. I should have been paying more attention in general, and I invested heavily in one channel of the company that ended up not being very profitable. It was a hard 2 -3 years, mainly because I didn’t feel like I should have been in that place after the previous trajectory.
This experience made me realize that struggles can come at any stage during the life of a business. COVID was the perfect pause that allowed me to re-focus and restructure the company to be more stable and profitable. I learned a lot and realized that no matter how well the business is doing, I always have to keep my eye on the ball and stay focused. I’m grateful that in the end we are stronger than ever.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ashley Schenkein Jewelry Design?
I have a small jewelry business that is located in Denver, CO. We specialize in custom wedding and bespoke jewelry as well as a ready-to-wear jewelry collection and a permanent jewelry collection, including our own line of charms. We are unique in that we aren’t trying to churn out as many custom pieces as possible so we can truly get to know our client’s stories and design pieces that honor who they are.
We have learned it is ALL about the details while providing a comfortable, educational, high-touch customer service experience every step of the way. This is at the core of the Ashley Schenkein Jewelry experience, whether you work with me or someone from the ASJD team.
We put the same heart and soul into each piece of jewelry we create. Our clients must not only love the piece aesthetically, but it also has to fit well, be architecturally sound, and resonate with their lifestyle so they reach for it often or never take it off.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I learned my craft through traveling to San Francisco, Cuenca, Ecuador, and Buenos Aires, Argentina before I moved back to my roots in Denver, CO and all of my training in South America was in Spanish.
