Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Koch.
Hi Betsy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I took my first yoga class 15 years ago, it and forever changed my path. I was a yogi for many years, while the dream of opening a studio was just a glimmer in my eye. And then when my family and I moved here to CO in 2019 I couldn’t find a studio that I loved. My former yoga studio in Minneapolis had that “Cheers” feeling – where everybody knows your name – and I wanted to create that here for myself and this new community and neighborhood. What started in 2020 as yoga in my backyard, and zoom yoga from my bedroom has now transformed into owning a trio of studios across South Denver (DTC, Centennial & Littleton). I’d be lying if I said there weren’t really scary and hard parts, especially opening a heated yoga studio in the middle of the pandemic in 2021 but building a team and a safe space where our neighbors can move and breathe together has been the professional joy of my life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening my first studio with all the COVID-era restrictions around capacity and masks was a huge challenge. Even just finding staff that were willing to work in fitness during that time, for a brand that was totally new to Colorado. It took a lot of faith on their part, and I continue to be really grateful for that. At the end of 2024, I acquired two additional (open) studios in Centennial and Littleton. That was another challenging and exciting moment to navigate change. Building relationships and trust with both the teams and the yogis from those studios has been some of the best and hardest work I’ve done as an entrepreneur.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At YogaSix, we are obsessed with breaking down the barriers that keep people from starting and growing their yoga practice. It is our goal to make every single person feel seen, welcomed and celebrated when they walk in the door, whether it’s their first class or their one thousandth class. The care and support our front desk and teaching team offer students is what I hear time and again sets us apart. Our team really wants to be there, and that comes through in the vibe and energy of the studio.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My general rule for creating partnerships is “offer before you ask”…. if you are connecting with a new person, local business owner, etc…. think about what can you OFFER them to support or grow their business before you ASK for their help in supporting yours. Searching out other local owners and learning their story goes a long way in building the trust that is the foundation for a great partnership.
