Meet Brianne Hill of Northern Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianne Hill

Hi Brianne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2020, my husband and I moved, with our four children, to Fort Collins. He was an assistant principal at a mega high school in Texas, and I was working for a non-profit that lost funding due to COVID. My parents (who still live in Thornton where I grew up), refinanced their house and had a mobile notary come to help with the papers.
After the notary left, I realized that would be a great part time, flexible job until something else came up….
…..and 5 years later, I am THE mobile notary go to for the majority of title companies and a handful of law companies here in Northern Colorado.
I assist the hospitals, rehab clinics and hospice centers and occasionally help with a general notary work, like adoption paperwork, vet tech, or even an out of state car title.
What started as a part time job, became my main source of employment. It is a perfect mixture of people, paperwork, numbers and knowing everyday will be a little different than the one before.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth….hahaha. The odds have honestly never been in my favor. My husband has worked as a public servant, and we have 4 kids. In 2022, our family received a health diagnosis that not only rocked us to our core but took every penny we had, every ounce of reserve, of grit, of faith and then some. We had moved during COVID, and had a very small (but mighty) support group.
I ended up working 4 different jobs for about 5 months, just to keep the lights on. But, the lights stayed on, we still hug each of our kids, and while we are still digging out from the beast, we have chosen joy as our focus.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a notary public (notary signing agent), my job is to take the paperwork to the client and have them sign in the necessary boxes. There are times it takes 10 minutes….there are other times, where a question comes up, a first-time home buyer needs a bit of extra reading and guidance, or one of the multiple pieces in the industry missed something small which turns into a 4-hour mad dash to meet a funding guideline. If I was ‘just a notary’ as I am frequently referred to, I may just sit and let the signers figure it out. What sets me apart is that I care that it is a smooth transaction, so I am familiar with the paperwork, am able to guide the signers to the answers for the questions, and I choose to be invested while I am in a signing, knowing that I am an extension of the company that trusted me to present their documents.

My favorite moment, and hardest, was a call to do a will signing for a young husband and father who had just been released to home hospice. Per state law, there needed to be 2 witnesses there. The wife was in survival mode with their young kids. I was able to meet with this family, make sure he was alert and aware, and have their necessary documents filled out for them. He passed 3 days later. The wife called me and said that was his last ‘good’ day and that she had peace knowing his affairs were in order. ***Note to you, don’t wait to fill out your will and Power of Financial and Medial Attorney. It is brutal if it is needed, and done in a heightened emotional or traumatic circumstance.

I also, being in the real estate industry, have had realtors not show up to their closings. I am left to explain the paperwork, take pictures, and share in the joy, or heartache, of buying or selling a home. After seeing some amazing realtors, and some not so kind ones, I decided I could also help in this capacity. I found NextHome Rocky Mountain, where their motto is “Humans over Houses” and I knew that I would never be high pressured to make a sale, and I could focus on the relationships. I may never be a billionaire, but I have made a billion people smile!

How do you think about luck?
This is a hard question. As I write this, our current administration has shut down the funding for my husband’s job (public servant) and the future we thought, if nothing else, was steady, is gone. While I choose to focus on the opportunities, we were just starting to recover from our 2022 year of fighting the beast, and my strength reserves weren’t ready for a new battle.
So, as Mr. Rogers of my childhood did, I am going to look for the helpers, and if I don’t see any, I will be the helper. And maybe that will ripple and we will create a tidal wave of good. And maybe it dashes on a wall, but little by little, inch by inch, the erosion will happen and the little acts of kindness will make their way through.
I wish I had good luck. I wish I was handed a job or a grant to say, “Go shine!” But every morning I look my 4 kids in the eyes and tell them to “Be the difference.” And if that is my soul purpose, then I will be content. But actions speak louder than words. My kids see me not quit. They watch me choose joy when all hope is gone. They see me prioritize people over profit and know where true value lies.
