Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Mooney.
Hi Brooke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am an avid outdoors girl, born and raised in Colorado. Mountain living brings me abundant joy, so this career path is a natural and perfect fit.
I started Discover Durango by simply taking friends, family, and acquaintances around Durango who wanted to make the most of their visit here but didn’t know what areas to explore, activities to spend money on, or where to eat. I found it was my passion to share this beautiful place with people, to maximize their time here, and to help make lasting memories for them.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path to starting a small business is not easy. I feel I gave myself a bachelor’s degree in business through the process. The learning curve has been fun for the most part, but you’ve got to love a good challenge and listening to podcasts! I’ve listened to and learned from so many great entrepreneurs and been inspired and encouraged by my local community of small business owners.
The greatest obstacle I face right now is the boring stuff like creating good payment systems, permitting, and marketing. When you start an outdoor activity business, you don’t think that you’ll be spending most of your time on the computer and on hold. Ha, ha!
But the reward is great when I get to see people come to life on their vacation feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired. Because that’s what the mountains do to you, they revive you!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Discover Durango, we focus on creating very personalized experiences in Durango and the four corners.
We customize every experience to our client’s abilities and interests. We offer a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, picnics, paddle boarding, and glamping. We book full-day, half-day, and multiple-day activities for our clients. I can’t say we specialize in any one thing because every experience is unique!
One of my favorite things we offer is pop-up glamping. This is for travelers who want to experience camping but can’t bring the gear or don’t have it. It is also very luxurious and comfortable! We make these setups so beautiful and fun. It’s always a delight to see how people respond to our pop-up glamping and the fun they have with it.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Anyone who starts a business is taking a risk. Whether you have lots of capital, no capital, partners, or no partners there is always the risk of failure. The statistics on small business start-ups are enough to scare anyone.
My risk has been some financial investment for sure, but most of all precious time. I am 39 and starting a business. I am not getting any younger and I don’t want to have to start over. I’m wanting to spend my time and energy on something that is thriving. So my risk has been investing my blood, sweat, and tears with the hope that I don’t have to find another career path in my 40s!!
I recently had a good friend say, “Grow where you’re planted.” I cherish those wise words with the understanding that you will grow when you operate out of your natural giftings and surroundings.
