Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Braband.
Hi Carolyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started getting into the tattoo industry in 2010. I always knew since getting my first tattoo at 19 that I wanted to get into the business. I also knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and it certainly wasn’t.
I hopped around from shop to shop for a few years figuring out my niche. Each shop was a new experience for me that helped me grow as an artist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a rough road for me getting into this field. I had to take a lot of setbacks in my life to achieve. From moving out of my first apartment back home, selling my car, and even ending an engagement at a time.
It all came down to me being committed to the industry and wanting to get ahead. It was extremely hard. Sometimes sacrifices must be made to better yourself. And that goes for all aspects of life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mainly specialize in traditional tattoos and fine-line tattoos. Most people that come to me want bold lines, with lots of color, or something as simple as a birth month flower outline or a simple signature from a loved one. I think my attitude and demeanor toward the clients set me apart from others.
It can be very intimidating to walk into a tattoo shop. Especially with all the ego-maniacs there are out there today. They can be very rude, and abrupt, and even belittle anyone who walks through the door. I try to be friendly to every potential client that comes through. There is no room for an ego trip in this industry. We can all be replaced by someone else very easily.
I am most proud of where I have come in the past 12 years in the tattoo industry. My skill is always being challenged with each new piece and ideas that someone may have. It’s super nerve-racking but with the help of the client’s trust, we end up getting a pretty awesome turn-out in the end.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The tattoo industry has already changed so much in the last 12 years that I have been a part of it. From the technical standpoint to the machines that allow us to create such amazing pieces.
It has come such a long way. I intend to try and keep up as best I can. Hopefully, I get to expand more on my style and get to learn more in-depth and complex techniques as my time in this field continues.
